STUDIO PLUS, Next to the Korea-Town Overview

Look, I’ll be straight with you about Studio Plus – it’s one of those places that grows on you once you figure out what it’s actually about. The name’s a bit misleading since you’re not technically in Koreatown (that’s more like 32nd between Fifth and Sixth), but you’re close enough that you can smell the Korean barbecue wafting up from 32nd Street when the wind’s right. The building sits on West 31st in that weird NoMad pocket where everything’s transitioning between the Garment District and proper Midtown.

What struck me first was how the lobby feels more like a converted office building than a traditional hotel – which, honestly, it probably was. The check-in desk is compact but efficient, and the staff actually knows the neighborhood well enough to give you real directions, not just “turn left and walk.” The rooms are studio-style (hence the name, I guess), and while they’re not going to win any design awards, they’re thoughtfully laid out. You get a decent kitchenette setup, which is clutch in New York when you don’t want to drop $30 on breakfast every morning. The beds are surprisingly comfortable – I mean, I’ve stayed in four-star places with worse mattresses.

Here’s what you need to know about the location: you’re a five-minute walk from Herald Square and all that chaos, but 31st Street itself is actually pretty quiet at night. The real gem is being this close to the actual good Korean spots without paying Midtown tourist prices. Wonjo on 32nd stays open late and has some of the best galbi in the city, and there’s this little corner market on 30th where you can grab decent coffee and actual food for your kitchenette. The subway situation is solid too – you’ve got the N, Q, R, W at Herald Square, plus the 6 at 28th if you’re heading uptown.

The building can get a bit noisy during the day since you’re surrounded by wholesalers and garment businesses, but it dies down after 6 PM. Parking is street parking or expensive garages, so just take the subway or walk – everything’s walkable from here anyway. I stayed during a particularly hot July, and the AC worked hard but kept up, which is more than I can say for some places I’ve been. The 7.2 rating feels about right – it’s not luxury, but it’s honest about what it is. You’re paying for location and functionality, not Instagram-worthy amenities, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need in this city.
