You know what struck me first about The Mark? It’s not trying to scream luxury at you the second you walk in – which honestly makes it feel more luxurious, if that makes sense. The lobby has this Jacques Grange design that’s sort of dramatic but not over the top, and I actually overheard someone saying it felt like being in a really wealthy friend’s apartment rather than a hotel. They’re not wrong. The location on 77th is perfect too – you’re right there between Central Park and all those Madison Avenue galleries, but tucked just far enough off the main drag that you don’t get the constant honking that drives you crazy in Midtown.

What really gets me about this place is the attention to weird little details that nobody else thinks about. The elevators are lined with this chocolate leather (I mean, who does that?), and every room has these custom everything – not just fancy linens, but like, the hangers are even special. I stayed in one of their junior suites and honestly spent way too much time just touching stuff because the textures were so good. The bathrooms have heated floors, which sounds silly until it’s February and you’re padding around at 6am. Room service comes on actual china, not those sad hotel plates, and they’ll press your clothes while you sleep if you want. The restaurant downstairs – Jean-Georges Vongerichten runs it – has this black and white striped everything that should feel gimmicky but somehow works perfectly.

Here’s the thing though, and why I keep coming back when I’m in the city: the staff actually remembers you. Not in that forced, wrote-it-down-in-a-file way, but genuinely. The concierge knows I always ask about new gallery openings, the doorman remembers my terrible habit of forgetting umbrellas. It’s expensive, sure – we’re talking serious money here – but you’re paying for that feeling of being taken care of without anyone hovering. Plus the location really can’t be beat if you want to feel like a New Yorker rather than a tourist. You can walk to the Frick in five minutes, hit Central Park for a morning run, or just people-watch from the bar while actual Upper East Siders do their thing. Fair warning though – if you’re looking for a scene or want to feel like you’re in the middle of everything, this might be too calm for you. But if you want to experience New York from the inside, with incredible service and design that’ll spoil you for other hotels, The Mark gets it right in ways that are hard to find anywhere else.
