You know, I’ve walked past the Essex House countless times over the years, and it always struck me as one of those classic New York hotels that somehow manages to look both grand and approachable at the same time. The building itself is this beautiful Art Deco tower that sits right on Central Park South – and I mean *right* on it, like you’re basically living on the park’s doorstep. When you’re standing in front of it, you can smell the horse carriages (yeah, they’re touristy, but honestly kind of charming) and hear the clip-clop on the street mixed with the usual Manhattan traffic symphony.

The location is actually pretty brilliant if you think about it. You’ve got the park right there for morning runs or evening strolls, but you’re also just a few blocks from Columbus Circle, which means easy subway access to anywhere in the city. I mean, you could walk to Lincoln Center in like ten minutes, or head down to Times Square if that’s your thing – though honestly, after a day in the city, coming back to this stretch of Central Park South feels like stepping into a quieter, more elegant version of New York. The lobby has this old-school Manhattan vibe, all marble and understated luxury, but it doesn’t feel stuffy. The staff actually seems to know what they’re doing, which – let’s be real – isn’t always a given even at expensive hotels.

What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel both quintessentially New York and like a proper retreat from the city’s intensity. The rooms I’ve seen have these massive windows that frame Central Park like living paintings, and during fall when the leaves are changing, well… it’s sort of unfair how gorgeous it is. The 7.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect (the rooms can feel a bit traditional for some people’s taste, and New York hotel prices are just brutal across the board), but there’s something solid and dependable about it. You’re paying for that address, obviously, but you’re also getting the kind of place where you can bring your parents or impress a client without worrying about any unpleasant surprises. Plus, there’s something to be said for being able to duck into Central Park whenever the city gets overwhelming – which, if you’re visiting New York, it probably will at some point. The whole area gets pretty quiet at night too, especially compared to Midtown, so you can actually sleep without earplugs.
