So I ended up at YOTEL Times Square after getting tired of cramped Midtown hotels, and honestly? It’s kind of brilliant in this weird, futuristic way that somehow works perfectly in New York. The building sits on 10th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen – which, let me tell you, is way better than being right in the tourist chaos of Times Square proper. You’re still close enough to catch a Broadway show (literally a 5-minute walk), but you can actually breathe and find decent food without fighting through crowds of people in I ♥ NY shirts.

The whole concept is basically “compact luxury” – think airplane first-class but as a hotel room. I mean, these aren’t huge spaces, but they’ve thought through every inch. The bed converts into a sofa during the day (which actually works, surprisingly), and there’s this cool mood lighting system that you’ll probably spend way too much time playing with. The bathrooms are tiny but efficient, kind of like a really nice yacht setup. What I loved most was the 24/7 grab-and-go market in the lobby – saved my life when I got back from a late dinner and needed water and aspirin. The check-in is mostly automated through these kiosks, which sounds impersonal but honestly moves way faster than standing behind someone arguing about their reservation.

Here’s the thing about the location that booking sites don’t really tell you – 10th Avenue can get pretty busy with traffic, especially during rush hour, but the rooms are well-insulated so it’s not terrible. Plus, you’re right by some of the best restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen, which locals know is where you actually want to eat, not in Times Square itself. I grabbed coffee most mornings at this little spot called Birch Coffee just down the street, and there’s a really good Thai place called Taboonette that I probably went to three times. The High Line entrance is maybe a 10-minute walk south, and the subway situation is decent – you’ve got the 50th Street stop for the C and E trains pretty close by. Honestly, for a 4-star place with a 7.7 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises: smart design, solid location, and none of the stuffiness you get at traditional Midtown hotels. Just don’t expect a massive room to spread out all your stuff – but in Manhattan, who really needs that anyway?
