Thompson Central Park New York, by Hyatt Overview
Honestly, the Thompson Central Park caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way. You walk into this place on 56th Street and there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about design here, not just threw together another Midtown hotel. The lobby has this moody, almost residential feel with dark wood and leather that doesn’t scream “tourist trap,” which is refreshing when you’re surrounded by the circus that is Times Square just a few blocks south.
What really gets me about this spot is the location intelligence. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the southwest corner of Central Park, but here’s what the booking sites don’t tell you – you’re also perfectly positioned between the subway chaos and the actual good stuff. The N, Q, R, and W trains at 57th Street are right there, but you’re far enough from the Port Authority madness that you can actually think straight. And if you’re into the whole Carnegie Hall thing (it’s right around the corner), or you want to hit up some of those impossible-to-get-into restaurants in the Theater District, you’re golden. I’ve stayed in places where you need a 20-minute subway ride just to get to decent food – not here.
The rooms themselves are what I’d call “New York practical” but elevated. They’re not massive – this is Manhattan, after all – but everything feels intentional. The bathrooms are actually nice, with proper water pressure (you’d be surprised how many fancy hotels mess this up), and the beds are legitimately comfortable, not just expensive-looking. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re in the middle of everything. The windows do their job, and the building itself seems solid – none of that paper-thin wall situation you get in some boutique places. One thing though – if you’re traveling in summer, the AC works great, but spring and fall the rooms can get a bit stuffy if you don’t crack a window.
The staff here actually knows the neighborhood, which sounds basic but isn’t always the case. Ask them about dinner spots and they’ll point you toward places that aren’t just tourist magnets. They mentioned this little wine bar on 58th that I never would have found otherwise – that kind of local intel makes a difference. Check-in was smooth, no weird upselling tactics, and they had our room ready early without us even asking.
Look, the 8.2 rating makes sense to me. It’s not perfect – the elevators can be slow during busy times, and if you’re expecting resort-style amenities, you’ll be disappointed. But for what it is – a grown-up hotel in an ideal spot that doesn’t feel like every other chain property – it delivers. If you want to actually experience New York instead of just surviving it, and you don’t mind paying a bit more for location and thoughtful touches, this place works. Just book direct if you can; sometimes they throw in perks that the third-party sites won’t mention.

First, the Thompson is in a great location—within walking distance of Central Park, Broadway and Time Square. The Upper-level staff (Front Desk and Managers) were great. The breakfast buffet was excellent with a good selection of food.
