The New York EDITION Overview

Look, I’ll be straight with you about The New York EDITION – it’s one of those hotels that looks absolutely stunning in photos but the reality is a bit more complicated. The location on Madison Avenue right where the Flatiron District starts is honestly pretty perfect. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Madison Square Park (which, if you haven’t been, is this little green oasis that somehow doesn’t feel touristy), and you can practically see the Flatiron Building from some of the rooms.

The Ian Schrager design is everywhere here – you know, that super sleek, almost intimidating modern luxury thing he does. The lobby feels like walking into a very expensive art gallery, all dark wood and dramatic lighting. Check-in was smooth enough, though the staff has this slightly aloof vibe that I think is supposed to feel sophisticated but sometimes just feels… well, aloof. The rooms are gorgeous, I mean really gorgeous, with these massive windows and marble bathrooms that make you feel like you’re in a fancy magazine spread. But here’s the thing – for a five-star hotel, some of the details feel off. The soundproofing isn’t quite what you’d expect (you’ll hear some street noise, especially if you’re facing Madison), and honestly, the service can be inconsistent. Sometimes it’s spot-on, other times you’re waiting longer than you should for pretty basic requests.

What I actually love about staying here is how it puts you right in the middle of everything without feeling like you’re in Times Square chaos. You can walk to Union Square in about ten minutes, the whole NoMad restaurant scene is right there, and getting to the Village or up to Midtown is super easy. The hotel’s restaurant, The Clocktower, is solid – not mind-blowing, but the cocktails are excellent and the space itself is pretty spectacular with those high ceilings. I’d probably grab breakfast somewhere else though (there’s a great little spot called Friend of a Farmer just a few blocks south that locals actually go to). The gym is decent sized for Manhattan, and the spa is small but well-appointed. Parking is valet only and will cost you a fortune, but honestly, you don’t need a car here anyway. The 6.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s a beautiful hotel in a fantastic location, but it’s not quite hitting all the marks you’d expect for what you’re paying. If you’re looking for that sleek, modern New York experience and don’t mind spending for the design and location, you’ll probably love it. Just don’t expect it to be perfect.
