The Maritime Hotel Overview
Honestly, The Maritime Hotel is one of those places that makes you do a double-take when you first see it. I mean, it looks like a giant red brick ship dropped anchor right in the middle of Chelsea – which is exactly what they were going for, actually. The whole building is designed like a luxury liner from the 1960s, complete with those distinctive round porthole windows that you can see from blocks away on West 16th Street.
What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel both quirky and sophisticated at the same time. The lobby has this whole nautical theme without being cheesy about it – think rich wood paneling and brass fixtures rather than plastic anchors and fishing nets. The rooms are small (and I mean small, even by NYC standards), but they’re designed so cleverly that it doesn’t feel cramped. Those porthole windows I mentioned? They’re actually pretty charming from the inside, though you might want to request a higher floor if you’re sensitive to street noise – 16th Street can get busy, especially on weekends when people are bar-hopping in the Meatpacking District.
You know what I love most about staying here? The location is absolutely perfect for exploring two of Manhattan’s best neighborhoods. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the High Line – and I mean the good entrance at Gansevoort Street, not the crowded one further north. Chelsea Market is right there too, which is clutch for grabbing coffee or picking up those overpriced but admittedly delicious cookies from Fat Witch Bakery. The hotel sits right on the border between Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, so you get the best of both worlds – quieter residential streets when you want to decompress, but easy access to some seriously good restaurants and bars when you’re ready to venture out. I’ve walked to the Whitney Museum, Washington Square Park, and even down to SoHo from here without breaking a sweat. The staff actually knows the neighborhood well too, which is rarer than you’d think – they’ve steered me toward some great little spots that aren’t in every guidebook. Parking is pretty much nonexistent (this is Chelsea, after all), but the subway connections are solid with the A, C, E, and L trains all within reasonable walking distance. Just be prepared for those cozy cabin-sized rooms – they’re charming, but if you’re traveling with someone who needs space to spread out, you might want to spring for a suite.

The lobby area is very attractive and feels welcoming and the room was a good size and comfortable. The fitness room, while compact, had a good selection of machines and weights and the continental breakfast being included was nice. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would be happy to return on another visit.
