The Inn Of Cape May Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Inn Of Cape May on Ocean Street, you immediately get that classic Victorian seaside vibe that Cape May does so well. This four-star property sits right in the heart of the historic district, and honestly — the location alone makes it worth considering. The building itself has that timeless charm you’d expect from one of America’s oldest seaside resorts, with wraparound porches and period details that feel authentic rather than forced.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re literally steps from everything that matters in Cape May. The beach is a quick two-minute walk, and you’re surrounded by those famous painted lady Victorian houses that everyone comes to see. Washington Street Mall, where all the shops and cafes are, is right around the corner. You know what’s really nice? You can actually walk to dinner most nights and leave the car parked. Speaking of parking, they’ve got their own lot, which saves you from hunting for street spots during busy summer weekends.
The Rooms
My room had that perfect balance of historic character and modern comfort — high ceilings, period furnishings, but also a decent air conditioning system (trust me, you’ll want that in July). The beds are genuinely comfortable, and most rooms have nice views either toward the ocean or the tree-lined streets. What surprised me was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re right in town. The bathrooms are updated without losing that vintage feel, though some are on the smaller side — just something to keep in mind.
Dining & Atmosphere
The restaurant downstairs serves solid American fare with a focus on fresh seafood — I mean, you’re in a fishing town, so they better get that right. Breakfast is particularly good, with local ingredients and portions that’ll fuel you for a day of beach walking or antiquing. The common areas have this relaxed, sophisticated feel that attracts a lot of couples looking for a romantic getaway. You’ll see people reading on the porches in the evening, wine glasses in hand, watching the world go by.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it captures the essence of Cape May without feeling stuffy or overly formal. The staff knows the area well and can point you toward the best sunset spots or recommend which trolley tour is actually worth taking. Couples especially seem drawn to the romantic atmosphere — there’s something about those Victorian porches and the sound of horse-drawn carriages clip-clopping past that just works. It’s the kind of place where you can unplug for a few days and remember why people have been coming to Cape May for over 150 years.

Beautiful, clean and comfortable rooms. Lovely historical building. Delicious food and beverages at Hotel Bar/cafe. Welcoming and attentive staff. Excellent location. Classic midcentury lobby decor. Tiny, human powered elevator was reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film.
