Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’ Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there – it’s got this genuine warmth that feels like stepping into someone’s favorite neighborhood spot, which is exactly what Harlem is all about. I mean, you’re literally planted between Lenox and 5th Avenue on 120th Street, so you’re in the heart of everything that makes this part of Manhattan special, but without the tourist circus you get further south.
The thing is, this place punches way above its 3-star rating (honestly, that 9.3 guest score tells the real story). It’s one of those hotels where the staff actually knows the neighborhood – like, they’ll tell you the Apollo Theater is obviously a must, but they’ll also point you toward the weekend jazz sessions at Minton’s or mention that the best coffee is at that little spot on Malcolm X Boulevard that doesn’t even have a proper sign. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works, and the walls are thick enough that you’re not hearing every conversation in the hallway. I stayed on the fourth floor and could catch these amazing glimpses of Marcus Garvey Park through the window – especially pretty in the early morning when the light hits the trees just right.
What I really loved was how easy it was to just… exist in this part of the city. You can walk to Central Park’s northern entrance in about ten minutes (the Conservatory Garden entrance, which is way less crowded than the main spots), and the subway connections are solid – the 2 and 3 trains at 125th Street get you downtown fast when you need that. But honestly, some of my best moments were just wandering the immediate area. There’s this incredible soul food place two blocks over that locals line up for on Sundays, and the brownstones on these side streets are just gorgeous – the kind of architecture that makes you slow down and actually look up from your phone. The hotel’s front desk folks seem to genuinely enjoy sharing these kinds of discoveries, which you don’t always get in more touristy areas. Sure, it’s not luxury – the lobby is small, check-in can take a few extra minutes during busy periods, and don’t expect a concierge in a fancy uniform. But if you want to experience a real New York neighborhood while still being connected to everything else the city offers, this spot delivers in ways that surprised me. Plus, parking is actually manageable around here compared to Midtown madness, though I’d still recommend the subway for most trips downtown.

A beautiful, peaceful guest house. We were in a very large, dynamically designed room with high ceilings and a lovely tree top view of the street. Loved all the pot plants decorating the front steps and art and prints on the walls plus the colourful doors! It was always lovely to return to at the end of a long day exploring NYC. We enjoyed being in Harlem and in a residential street – easy walk to the subway and local spots including a wonderful organic whole food market and Sylvia's Restaurant. Communication with Boothe was excellent. We very much appreciated Boothe's generosity and no fuss attitude.
