SoHo 54 Overview
You know what caught me off guard about SoHo 54? The moment you walk in, it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. This isn’t one of those boutique hotels desperately screaming “look how cool we are” – it’s just a solid, well-run place that happens to sit on one of SoHo’s quieter streets. And honestly, that’s exactly what you want when you’re staying in this neighborhood.
The location is pretty much perfect if you actually want to experience SoHo without the tourist circus. Watts Street is just residential enough that you’re not dealing with the Spring Street shopping madness, but you’re literally a two-minute walk from all the galleries and restaurants you came here for anyway. I mean, you can hit up Balthazar for brunch, browse the boutiques on Broadway, then duck back to your room when the crowds get overwhelming – which they will. The whole area gets pretty quiet after 10 PM too, so you’re not dealing with street noise all night like you would closer to Houston or Canal.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that most guests are here to explore, not hang out in the lobby. Check-in was quick, they had good neighborhood recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist spots (the coffee place on Sullivan they suggested actually became my daily stop), and they didn’t hover. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a three-star in this price range – clean, comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works. The beds are actually pretty decent, and the bathroom situation is totally fine, though don’t expect a soaking tub or anything. There’s this nice touch where they’ve got local art on the walls instead of generic hotel prints, which feels right for the neighborhood.
Parking is going to be a nightmare if you’re driving – I mean, it’s SoHo, what did you expect? – but the subway situation is solid. You’ve got the 6 at Spring Street just a few blocks away, and honestly, walking to most places in Lower Manhattan is totally doable from here. The whole Nolita area is right there, you can walk to Little Italy (though honestly, skip it), and even getting to the West Village is just a pleasant stroll across SoHo.
The 7.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s not going to disappoint either. I’ve stayed at places in this neighborhood that cost twice as much and weren’t nearly as comfortable or well-located. Sometimes you just want a clean room, a good shower, and to be in the middle of everything without paying Crosby Street Hotel prices, you know? SoHo 54 delivers on that promise without any drama.
