Romer Hell’s Kitchen Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Romer Hell’s Kitchen, I was a bit skeptical. Another boutique hotel trying to capitalize on the neighborhood’s name? But walking up to 851 8th Avenue, you actually get this immediate sense that someone put real thought into this place. It’s right there in the thick of things, literally a stone’s throw from the Port Authority chaos, but somehow they’ve managed to create this little pocket of calm that doesn’t feel like you’re hiding from the city.
The thing about Hell’s Kitchen is that it’s gotten so much cooler in the past decade – you’ve got all these amazing restaurants now, and honestly, staying here puts you within walking distance of some serious food scenes that most tourists never discover. I mean, you can stumble out of Romer and be at Joe Allen in five minutes, or hit up one of those tiny Thai places on 9th Avenue that locals actually frequent. The hotel staff gets this too – they don’t just point you toward Times Square like you’re some sort of tourist automaton. They actually know the neighborhood, which is rarer than you’d think in Manhattan hotels.
What really sold me on the place though was the attention to detail without all the pretentious nonsense. The rooms aren’t huge (this is New York, after all), but they’re thoughtfully designed in a way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere with personality rather than just crashing in a generic box. You know what I loved? The lighting actually works – you can read in bed without squinting, and there are enough outlets that you don’t have to choose between charging your phone and using the lamp. Small things, but they matter when you’re trying to decompress after walking 20,000 steps around the city. The sound insulation is surprisingly good too, considering you’re basically in the middle of everything. I was expecting sirens and street noise all night, but it was actually pretty peaceful. The whole vibe strikes this nice balance between sophisticated and approachable – it’s not trying to be the Standard or some scene-y place where you feel underdressed in the lobby, but it’s definitely a step up from your typical midtown business hotel. Plus, that 8.6 rating isn’t just inflated marketing speak – you can tell they’ve figured out how to make people genuinely happy without breaking the bank.

Fab location and the hotel size was great, never felt too busy and the cafe was great, good coffee and some nice locations around the lobby to enjoy it.
Vicki from Australia (8/10)
Excellent location. Just enough out of town to be able to unwind at the end of a long day doing all the touristy things but still close enough to walk everywhere. Very comfortable rooms albeit a bit dimly lit. Staff were very lovely and helpful. Coffee from downstairs cafe was perfect start to the day. So close to subway easily accessible. Lots of restaurants and take away options nearby. Good heating. Have moved to another hotel as we are in NYC for a couple of weeks and missing Romer already after checkout this morning!
Glenn from New Zealand (8/10)
Very narrow options for breakfast. Disappointed that there was never any water available in the cafe.

We LOVED the hotel – the neighborhood location was great, room itself was comfy & big enough for our group of 3, and we definitely made use of the connecting piano bar!
