Kixby Overview

You know what caught me off guard about the Kixby? I was expecting another cookie-cutter Midtown hotel, but this place actually has personality. It’s tucked right there on 35th between Fifth and Sixth – honestly, I walked past it twice before spotting the entrance because it doesn’t scream “HOTEL” like some of the bigger chains around Herald Square.

The location is pretty brilliant once you get your bearings. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Empire State Building (which means dealing with tourist crowds, but also means your out-of-town friends will be impressed), and Penn Station is close enough that you can roll your suitcase there without breaking a sweat. I mean, the whole area gets hectic during rush hour – you’ll hear sirens and that constant hum of city traffic – but step inside the Kixby and it’s surprisingly quiet. They must have decent soundproofing because I barely heard the street noise from my room on the fourth floor. The design feels more boutique than business hotel, with this sort of modern-industrial thing going on that doesn’t feel forced. Dark wood, exposed brick in some spots, lighting that’s actually flattering instead of that harsh corporate stuff.

What really sold me was the staff’s vibe – they seemed to actually know the neighborhood instead of just rattling off scripted recommendations. The front desk guy told me about this little coffee spot on 36th that locals hit up (definitely not Starbucks), and he was right about avoiding the block between Broadway and Seventh during matinee times if you’re trying to get anywhere quickly. The rooms are well-designed without being fussy – good water pressure, outlets where you need them, and the bed was firm enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been sleeping on a marshmallow. Sure, it’s not huge space-wise, but honestly, when you’re in Manhattan you’re not planning to hang out in your room anyway. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the Plaza, but it delivers on what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. I’d definitely book it again, especially since parking in that area is a nightmare anyway, so being close to Penn Station and all the subway lines actually makes your life easier. Plus, there’s something nice about staying somewhere that feels like it belongs in the neighborhood rather than just landed there.
