Look, I’ll be straight with you about Hotel Moca NYC – it’s not going to win any awards, but there’s something oddly charming about this little spot tucked away in Washington Heights. When I first walked up to 507 West 181st Street, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. The neighborhood has this authentic New York energy that you just don’t get in Midtown, you know? There’s a Dominican bakery right around the corner that smells incredible in the mornings, and the 181st Street A train station is maybe a three-minute walk – which, let me tell you, is a godsend when you’re hauling luggage.

The hotel itself is… well, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a 3-star place with a 5.1 rating. I mean, the lobby’s pretty basic, but the staff was actually really helpful when I needed directions to the Cloisters (which is surprisingly close, by the way). My room was clean enough, though the AC unit made this weird humming sound that took me a night to get used to. The walls are a bit thin – I could hear my neighbor’s TV until around 11 PM, but honestly, that’s pretty standard for budget hotels in the city. What I did appreciate was the view from my fourth-floor window; you can actually see slices of the Hudson River between the buildings if you crane your neck a bit, and there’s something peaceful about watching the neighborhood wake up in the morning.

Here’s the thing though – if you’re looking for a place to crash while exploring upper Manhattan without breaking the bank, Hotel Moca actually makes sense. You’re way closer to Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters than you’d be staying downtown, and the food scene up here is incredible (seriously, try the mofongo place two blocks south). The subway ride to Times Square takes about 30 minutes, which isn’t terrible, and you’ll save probably $100+ per night compared to staying in tourist central. Just don’t expect luxury – the breakfast is pretty forgettable, and the elevator moves like it’s thinking about each floor. But the front desk guy (I think his name was Miguel?) gave me great recommendations for late-night spots, and honestly, that local knowledge was worth more than fancy amenities. If you’re the type of traveler who spends most of your time out exploring anyway, you might actually prefer the authentic neighborhood vibe over sterile hotel perfection.
