Hotel Lucerne Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Lucerne on West 79th Street, you immediately get that classic Upper West Side vibe — it’s got this understated elegance that feels authentically New York without trying too hard. The building itself has character, and honestly, that’s something you don’t always find in four-star hotels around the city. What struck me right away was how the staff seemed to genuinely recognize returning guests — and apparently there are quite a few of them, which says something about the place.
The Neighborhood Advantage
You know what’s great about this location? You’re literally steps from Central Park, but you’re also in this residential pocket that feels like actual New York life. I mean, couples absolutely love it here — they rate the location nearly perfect, and I get why. You can grab coffee at one of the local spots on Amsterdam Avenue, take a morning jog through the park, or just people-watch from one of the nearby benches. The subway access is solid too, which matters when you’re trying to get downtown without spending a fortune on taxis.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this comfortable, lived-in feeling — not stuffy or overly formal like some Manhattan hotels can be. The windows actually open (a rarity in the city), and if you’re facing the right direction, you get glimpses of the park through the tree line. The beds are genuinely comfortable, and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. Little touches like decent lighting for reading and outlets where you actually need them show they’ve thought about what travelers really want.
Breakfast Worth Mentioning
Here’s where Hotel Lucerne actually surprised me — their breakfast setup is pretty comprehensive. They’ve got continental options, but also American classics, plus they’re serious about accommodating different dietary needs with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices. I watched them prepare fresh items throughout the morning, not just reheat things that had been sitting around. The restaurant area has this warm, neighborhood café feel that makes you want to linger over your coffee rather than rush out to start sightseeing.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it balances being a proper hotel with feeling like you’re staying somewhere that understands New York. The fact that so many people come back tells you everything — it’s not just about the location (though that 9.5 rating from recent guests speaks volumes). It’s about finding that sweet spot where you get professional service and comfortable accommodations without the pretension or sky-high prices of some Manhattan properties. Whether you’re planning romantic walks through Central Park or just want a solid base for exploring the city, Hotel Lucerne delivers on the things that actually matter to travelers.
Locals suggest to book apartments in New York around Williamsburg for river sunsets, vinyl shops, and craft breweries.

Tina from Australia (9/10)
Lovely staff, location was great as it was outside the super tourist area and had a lot of restaurants/bars/cafes. The room was comfortable albeit small for four adults. The heater was excessively noisy but it's an older building. The restaurant "Nice Martin" next door was fantastic for all your culinary needs.
Susan from Spain (8/10)
The hotel was in a fairly good location with the subway just a block away . There are lots of restaurants and bars nearby .
Jill from United States (7/10)
The rooms were pretty nice and were quite clean. The front lobby and staff did a nice job and greeting/checking in guests in a timely manner. The lobby is small but very nicely decorated.
