Hotel Five44 sits right in the thick of Hell’s Kitchen, and honestly, that’s both its biggest selling point and something you need to know going in. I mean, you’re literally steps from some of the best Korean BBQ spots on 46th Street and those tiny Ethiopian places that locals guard like secrets, but you’re also going to hear the city – delivery trucks at 6 AM, that kind of thing. The building itself has this sort of industrial-chic vibe that actually works, though I’d call it more “refined warehouse” than boutique hotel.

What struck me right away was how the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood. When I asked about grabbing coffee that wasn’t Starbucks, the front desk guy immediately pointed me toward this little spot on 9th Avenue that makes ridiculously good cortados. The rooms are honestly smaller than what you’d get in Midtown East for the same price, but they’re smart about the space – everything has a purpose, and the bathrooms are surprisingly well-designed. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this), though the walls aren’t exactly soundproof. You’ll hear your neighbors if they’re having a loud phone call, but it’s not like paper-thin hotel walls where you hear everything.

Here’s what I really appreciated: they get that most people staying here want to be out experiencing the city, not hanging around the hotel lobby. So while there’s no fancy rooftop bar or whatever, there’s a decent little coffee setup in the morning, and they’ll hold packages if you’re doing serious shopping. The location means you can walk to Times Square if you absolutely must, but you’re also close enough to the more interesting parts of the West Side – the High Line’s about a 15-minute walk, and you can actually get to Central Park pretty easily. Parking is going to cost you (this is Manhattan, after all), but there’s a garage two blocks away that’s slightly less brutal than the hotel’s rate. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was planning to spend most of my time exploring Hell’s Kitchen and the surrounding areas. Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper, and don’t expect luxury – think of it more as a really solid base camp for a proper New York adventure.
