Hotel Beacon Overview
You know what really struck me about Hotel Beacon? It’s got this perfect Upper West Side thing going on where it feels like a proper hotel but doesn’t scream “tourist trap.” I mean, you’re right on Broadway at 72nd Street, which honestly might sound chaotic, but the rooms are surprisingly quiet – they’ve got decent windows that actually block out most of the street noise.
The lobby has this sort of understated elegance that I really appreciated. Not trying too hard, if you know what I mean. Check-in was smooth, and the staff seemed genuinely familiar with the neighborhood rather than just rattling off rehearsed recommendations. The woman at the front desk told me about this little coffee spot on Amsterdam that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid four-star place – clean, comfortable beds, and the bathrooms are recently updated. Nothing fancy, but everything works properly, which is honestly more than you can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed.
But here’s the real selling point: the location is just fantastic for actually experiencing New York rather than being stuck in the Midtown madness. You’ve got Riverside Park literally three blocks away, which is perfect for morning runs or just escaping the city chaos for a bit. The 72nd Street subway station is right there – you can hop on the 1, 2, or 3 and be in Times Square in like ten minutes if you must, but you’re also walking distance to Lincoln Center, the Dakota, and all those great restaurants on Columbus Avenue. I grabbed dinner at Jacob’s Pickles one night (about a five-minute walk) and honestly, that alone made the stay worth it. The whole area has this lived-in neighborhood feel that you miss when you’re staying down in the tourist zones.
Parking is actually doable around here – I mean, it’s still New York so don’t expect miracles, but there are a few garages nearby and street parking isn’t completely impossible. The hotel doesn’t have its own lot, which keeps costs down I think. One thing that surprised me was how quiet the side streets get at night. You’re on Broadway, sure, but duck down one of the residential blocks and it’s almost peaceful. Well, peaceful for Manhattan anyway. The whole Upper West Side has this interesting mix of families, Columbia students, and longtime New Yorkers that gives it more character than some of the more polished neighborhoods.
I’d definitely come back here, especially if I wanted to feel like I was staying in an actual New York neighborhood rather than just visiting one. The 8.8 rating makes sense – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets all the important stuff right and the location really can’t be beat if you want easy access to both the touristy stuff and the real city.

Having a kitchenette in the room is so useful in NYC where even a small breakfast is very expensive.
Ask for a quite room and it will be on a side street with very little noise.
Staff is exceptionally friendly.

We loved our stay! Came for just a night to see a concert next door with our 5 year old. Loved being able to leave the venue and be in our room minutes later. We were upgraded to an executive suite and it was STUNNING. Staff were helpful, room was incredible, would absolutely return next time we want to see a show at the Beacon Theater.
