Congress Hall Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Congress Hall feels like stepping into a postcard from Victorian America — and I mean that in the best possible way. This four-star hotel sits right in the heart of historic Cape May, and honestly, the yellow clapboard facade with its wraparound porches immediately tells you you’re somewhere special. The building dates back to 1816, and while they’ve obviously updated everything inside, there’s this wonderful sense that you’re staying in a piece of American history rather than just another hotel.
The Perfect Cape May Location
You know what really struck me about this place? The location is absolutely unbeatable — recent guests rated it 9.7, and couples especially seem to love it here. You’re literally steps from Cape May’s pristine beaches, and the Victorian district with all its gingerbread houses is right at your doorstep. I spent hours just wandering the tree-lined streets, popping into the little boutiques and cafes. The Washington Street Mall is maybe a two-minute walk, and if you’re into the whole ghost tour thing (Cape May’s supposedly pretty haunted), most of them start right nearby.
Comfortable Accommodations
The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort — think original hardwood floors but with updated bathrooms and air conditioning that actually works. What really impressed me were the beds; they’ve got this reputation for being incredibly comfortable, and I can confirm that’s not just marketing speak. I’m usually a pretty light sleeper, but I slept like a rock every night. The windows are big and let in tons of natural light, and if you get a front-facing room, you’ll have views of the ocean or the historic district.
Dining and Amenities
The Blue Pig Tavern is their main restaurant, and it’s actually become quite the destination on its own. The menu focuses on local seafood — I had some of the best crab cakes I’ve ever tasted — and they’ve got a solid wine list. What I really appreciated was that they don’t try to be overly fancy; it’s good food in a relaxed atmosphere. There’s also parking available right on-site, which might not sound like a big deal until you’ve tried to find a spot in Cape May during peak season. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver.
Why Guests Love It
Congress Hall works because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s not trying to compete with big city hotels — instead, it leans into what makes Cape May special. The staff genuinely seems to care about the place and knows the area well; they’ll point you toward the best local spots without making you feel like you’re getting a sales pitch. The whole experience feels authentic, from the creaky floorboards to the rocking chairs on the porch where you can watch the world go by. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to spend time at the hotel, not just crash between beach days.

We liked everything about the property. It’s so historic and beautifully maintained. We saw it decorated for Christmas and it was gorgeous. It’s so close to the beach and places to eat and shop!

It was my first time staying at Congress Hall and first time I’ve been to Cape May since a child. It was a great overnight stay. The location is wonderful from all the shops. We didn’t realize it was already decorated for Christmas so that was a plus! The entire staff is friendly. You don’t even have to leave the hotel if you don’t want!
