DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn Station, NJ Overview
First Impressions
Walking into the DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn Station, NJ feels like stepping into a business traveler’s dream — and honestly, that’s exactly what it is. This four-star property sits right in the Gateway Center on Raymond Boulevard, which means you’re literally steps from Newark Penn Station. I mean, when they say “Penn Station” in the name, they’re not kidding around. The lobby has that polished Hilton feel without being stuffy, and yes, you still get those famous warm chocolate chip cookies at check-in. The overall design strikes a balance between professional sophistication and welcoming warmth.
Location That Actually Works
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re not stuck in some random Newark location wondering how to get anywhere. Penn Station is right there, so Manhattan is about 20 minutes away by train. The couples who stay here seem to get it too (they rated the location 8.6, which is pretty impressive). You’ve got the Prudential Center nearby if you’re catching a Devils game, and honestly, the whole area has been getting better over the years. There’s parking available on-site, which is huge if you’re driving — trust me, finding decent parking around transit hubs can be a nightmare. The accessibility to public transportation makes this location particularly valuable for business travelers.
The Room Experience
The room situation here is actually solid. Recent guests have been raving about the beds — apparently they’re “very comfy,” and after staying in way too many hotels with questionable mattresses, I can tell you that’s not something to take lightly. The rooms have that modern DoubleTree setup with decent work spaces (important if you’re here on business) and bathrooms that don’t make you feel like you’re camping. Nothing groundbreaking, but everything works the way it should. The furnishings are contemporary and well-maintained throughout.
Morning Fuel
Breakfast here is American-style, which basically means you’ll find the usual suspects — eggs, bacon, pancakes, that sort of thing. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets the job done, especially if you’re rushing to catch a train. The restaurant area is pretty standard for a business hotel — clean, efficient, and designed to get you fed and on your way. You know what though? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need. The staff keeps everything running smoothly during peak morning hours.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a resort where you’re going to spend your whole vacation lounging around. But if you need a reliable place to sleep with easy access to New York City, solid beds, and the kind of service Hilton is known for, it delivers. The location rating of 8.7 from recent guests tells the real story — people appreciate being able to hop on a train to Manhattan without dealing with the chaos and expense of staying in the city itself. It’s that sweet spot where convenience meets comfort, and honestly, that’s harder to find than you’d think. For business travelers and transit-focused visitors, this property represents excellent value.

There is nothing wrong with this hotel. The staff were friendly. Check-in was prompt. The free shuttle to and from the airport was greatly appreciated. We had an issue with bedding (had requested hypoallergenic) but staff fixed this the day we mentioned it. My only problem (and perhaps I am old and naive) was at $220 a night I expect something more than just a room. I expect at least a bit of ambiance. Perhaps a nice lounge with an urn of fresh brewed coffee. A bar with a view. A pool or sauna. But really this is just a clean place to sleep.
