Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’ Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’ on West 120th Street, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical hotel experience. The name gives it away, honestly — this three-star spot in Harlem feels more like staying at a friend’s place who really knows how to make you comfortable. I mean, the whole vibe is warm and unpretentious, which is exactly what you want when you’re exploring one of New York’s most culturally rich neighborhoods. The building itself has that classic Harlem brownstone charm that makes you feel like you’re part of the community rather than just passing through as another tourist.

The Harlem Advantage

You know what’s great about this location? You’re right between Lenox and 5th Avenue, which puts you in the sweet spot of everything. Marcus Garvey Park (that’s the Mont Morris the name references) is literally around the corner, and honestly, it’s one of those neighborhood gems that most tourists never discover. The subway connections are solid too — you can get downtown in about 20 minutes, but why would you want to leave when you’ve got the Apollo Theater, Red Rooster, and some of the city’s best jazz clubs within walking distance? The area comes alive at different times of day, offering everything from morning joggers in the park to evening music that drifts from nearby venues.

The Room Experience

The room itself surprised me in the best way. Sure, it’s not fancy — this is a three-star place after all — but everything feels thoughtfully put together. The beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in NYC), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re on a busy street. The windows do their job, and you’ll sleep better than you might expect. Each room has its own personality with local artwork and touches that remind you where you are without being heavy-handed about it.

Local Flavor

Here’s where Soul Food ‘Mont Morris’ really shines — they get that you’re here to experience Harlem, not hide from it. The staff knows the neighborhood inside and out, and they’re genuinely excited to point you toward the good stuff. Want to know where locals actually eat Sunday brunch? They’ll tell you. Looking for live music that isn’t touristy? They’ve got recommendations. The front desk becomes your personal concierge for authentic experiences, whether that’s finding the best soul food joint or discovering which gallery openings are worth your time.

Why Guests Love It

The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there — couples especially seem to love how the location lets them explore a side of New York that feels real and vibrant. You’re not paying Manhattan prices for a cramped room with no character. Instead, you get to wake up in one of the city’s most historically significant neighborhoods, grab coffee from a local spot, and actually feel connected to the place you’re visiting. It’s about being somewhere that matters, somewhere with soul. The thoughtful service and authentic neighborhood experience create a stay that resonates long after you leave, giving you stories to tell that go beyond the typical tourist checklist.

Hotel in New York reservations spike before fashion week, so style lovers lock in loft suites early.

  • Jean from Australia (10/10)

A beautiful, peaceful guest house. We were in a very large, dynamically designed room with high ceilings and a lovely tree top view of the street. Loved all the pot plants decorating the front steps and art and prints on the walls plus the colourful doors! It was always lovely to return to at the end of a long day exploring NYC. We enjoyed being in Harlem and in a residential street – easy walk to the subway and local spots including a wonderful organic whole food market and Sylvia's Restaurant. Communication with Boothe was excellent. We very much appreciated Boothe's generosity and no fuss attitude.
