Courtyard New York Manhattan/Times Square Overview
You know what struck me first about the Courtyard on West 40th? It’s actually tucked away just enough that you escape the absolute chaos of Times Square, but you’re still close enough to walk there in about three minutes. I mean, when I say “escape” – you’ll still hear the city humming outside, but it’s not the full assault of tourist madness right at your doorstep.
The lobby feels refreshingly normal for this part of Manhattan, which honestly is a relief. No overwhelming marble or trying-too-hard design – just clean, modern spaces where you can actually sit and think without someone in an Elmo costume wandering by. The staff seems genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions like at some of the bigger chain places around here. Check-in was smooth when I stayed, though I’d imagine things get hectic during peak theater season (you’re literally a block from all the Broadway action). The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – nothing fancy, but everything works and the beds are actually comfortable. The real win is the soundproofing, which is better than you might think for being this close to the action. Sure, you’ll hear some street noise, but it’s not going to keep you up unless you’re an incredibly light sleeper.
What I really appreciated was how walkable everything is from here – and I don’t just mean the obvious Times Square stuff. Bryant Park is right there when you need a breather from the concrete, and you’ve got the subway practically at your feet with multiple lines. The whole Garment District surrounds you, so there’s this interesting mix of actual New Yorkers going about their business alongside the tourists. Food options are everywhere, obviously, but walk a block or two away from the main drag and you’ll find places where locals actually eat without paying theme-park prices. The hotel’s restaurant is decent enough for breakfast if you’re in a hurry, but honestly, grab a bagel from one of the corner spots – you’re in New York, after all.
For the price point in this area, it’s a solid choice, especially if you want to be in the thick of things without staying in one of those massive tourist hotels where you feel like cattle. The 8.1 rating makes sense – it’s not going to wow you, but it won’t disappoint either. Just don’t expect a ton of amenities or room service at midnight. This is more about location and reliability than luxury, which is exactly what a lot of people need when they’re planning to spend most of their time exploring the city anyway.

Location to Times Square good. Although turn left out of the entrance a little further down the road and there was always a group of men smoking drugs. Not pleasant.

Whenever you rate a hotel in New York you have to compare to other NY hotels, not hotels in general. You are going to pay a lot and the room will be small. This property is a very good value, and in an excellent location. Half a block from Bryant Park and half a block from Times Square, yet very quiet. Staff was friendly and quickly attended to a minor maintenance issue in the room.
Gordon from Canada (9/10)
Location was excellent for what we wanted and the room was spacious.
