The Chelsean New York Overview
You know what struck me first about The Chelsean? It’s got this understated New York vibe that doesn’t try too hard – which honestly feels refreshing on a street where every other building is screaming for attention. The location on West 25th is actually pretty sweet if you know Chelsea at all. You’re basically a five-minute walk from the High Line entrance at 26th Street, and I mean the good entrance where you don’t have to wait in those insane tourist lines. The hotel itself sits in this interesting pocket where you get the neighborhood feel without being stuck in the middle of nowhere – there’s a decent bodega right on the corner, and that little Ethiopian place two blocks down that locals actually go to.
The rooms are, well, they’re honest New York hotel rooms. Nothing fancy, but they’ve got character and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. I stayed on the fourth floor and barely heard street noise, which is saying something since 25th can get busy with all the traffic heading to the Flatiron District. The bathrooms are small but functional – you’re not going to be doing yoga in there, but the water pressure is solid and the towels are actually thick enough to dry off with. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood inside and out. The guy at the front desk gave me directions to this amazing coffee spot on 24th that I never would have found otherwise, and when I needed a late-night pharmacy, he knew exactly which Duane Reade stayed open past midnight.
Here’s the thing about The Chelsean – it’s not going to blow you away with marble lobbies or rooftop pools, but it gets the fundamentals right in a way that matters when you’re actually trying to experience New York rather than just Instagram it. The 7.1 rating makes sense; it’s solidly good without any major complaints. You’re genuinely close to everything that makes Chelsea interesting – Madison Square Park is a pleasant ten-minute stroll, the subway connections at 23rd Street give you options, and you can walk to both the Village and Midtown without wanting to collapse. I actually ended up extending my stay an extra night because checking out and dealing with luggage felt like more hassle than it was worth, which is probably the best compliment I can give a place. It’s the kind of spot where you settle in quickly and don’t spend your whole trip thinking about the hotel – you’re too busy enjoying the city.

It’s better if there is a rooftop or terrace to hang out.

The hotel was in a location that was easy to get to from Penn Station (10 min walk), and somewhat close to the subway. Which we took over Uber that was way too expensive. ($95 to go uptown vs $2.90 subway). Clean hotel room that was quiet enough to get a good night sleep.

The Chelsean is a very worn hotel, without some amenities that some people would find normal. But the staff is great and the location is great. The bed needed an upgrade, it wasn’t too comfortable. Someone who is disturbed by a partner’s movements at night might want to get a room with separate beds.

The staff was very helpful! The vending machine was handy, and the house keepers were wonderful! We had a clean bathroom/beds made every day.
