Chambers powered by Sonder Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Midtown, and Chambers powered by Sonder really caught me off guard – in the best way possible. The moment you walk into this place on 56th Street, you realize it’s not trying to be your typical corporate hotel. There’s this boutique feel that actually feels authentic, not like someone just threw some velvet chairs in a lobby and called it “curated.” The building itself has character – you know, that solid pre-war bones that you can’t fake in newer constructions. What really struck me was how they’ve managed to keep the intimacy of a smaller property while still delivering on all the things you actually need when you’re dealing with the chaos of Manhattan.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without feeling completely overwhelmed. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Central Park – I mean, you can see the trees from some of the upper floors, which is sort of miraculous in this part of town. Carnegie Hall is right there too, and I love that you can grab coffee at one of those little delis on 57th before wandering over to catch a show. The subway situation is solid with the N, Q, R, and W trains at 57th Street, though honestly, I found myself walking to most places because everything feels so accessible. Fifth Avenue shopping is basically at your doorstep, but here’s the thing – the actual street the hotel’s on stays relatively quiet, especially at night. No crazy bar crowds or constant honking like you get closer to Times Square.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve nailed the tech-forward approach without making it feel cold or impersonal. The Sonder system works smoothly – mobile check-in was actually seamless, not one of those frustrating app experiences that leaves you standing in a lobby feeling stupid. The rooms have this clean, modern aesthetic that doesn’t scream “designed by committee.” Good lighting, which is rarer than it should be, and the beds are legitimately comfortable – not just hotel-marketing comfortable. The kitchenettes are tiny but functional if you want to avoid spending $30 on room service eggs. I mean, you’re in New York, so you’ll probably eat out most of the time anyway, but it’s nice to have the option. The building can get a bit busy during peak check-in times since it’s popular with both business travelers and people doing the full Manhattan tourist experience, but the energy feels good – like people are actually excited to be there. That 8.3 rating makes sense when you experience it firsthand.

I like the concept of Sonder, where you can pick up the things you need for your room (soap, coffee, shower cap etc.) in the lounge and you can always refill your water bottle for free. Also, entering the room with the Sonder app went seamless. Good concept and nice hotel on the Fifth Avenue, very near to the central park. Also, the staff was very kind and always helpful. The rooms were very nice and we felt very comfortable in the amenities.
