You know what struck me first about Washington Square Hotel? It’s one of those places where you actually feel like you’re staying in Greenwich Village, not just visiting it. I mean, you walk out the front door on Waverly Place and you’re literally thirty seconds from Washington Square Park – and I’m talking about the good part, near the arch, not some random corner. The building itself has this classic New York character that honestly makes some of the fancier Midtown hotels feel soulless by comparison.

The rooms are smaller than what you’d get at a chain hotel, but that’s sort of the point. This is Greenwich Village – everything’s compact and layered with history. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to keep the authentic feel without making you suffer for it. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this), the WiFi works, and the bathrooms are updated enough that you’re not dealing with ancient plumbing. The street can get a little lively on weekend nights – you’re in the Village, after all – but it’s more charming than disruptive. If you’re someone who needs absolute silence, maybe pack earplugs, but honestly, the gentle hum of one of the world’s greatest neighborhoods is part of the experience.

What really sells this place is the location intelligence. You’re a two-minute walk from some of the best coffee in the city (Bluestone Lane is right there), and you can wander down MacDougal Street whenever the mood strikes. The subway situation is perfect too – you’ve got multiple lines within easy walking distance, so you’re not stuck with just one option when there are delays. The hotel staff clearly knows the neighborhood – they’ll steer you toward Minetta Tavern if you want to splurge on dinner, or point you to Joe’s Pizza if you’re keeping it real. During summer evenings, you can grab a drink somewhere nearby and end up people-watching in the park until way later than you planned. In winter, there’s something cozy about coming back to this little European-feeling hotel after walking around in the cold. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a temporary local rather than a tourist, which is exactly what you want when you’re staying in one of Manhattan’s most authentic neighborhoods.
