Hyatt Union Square New York Overview

You know what struck me first about the Hyatt Union Square? It’s actually right there on Fourth Avenue, not directly on the square itself—which, honestly, turned out to be perfect. You get all the energy of Union Square without the constant chaos right outside your window. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the farmer’s market on Saturdays, but you can actually sleep at night.

The location is sort of genius when you think about it. Fourth Avenue puts you right in that sweet spot between the Village and Midtown—I walked to Washington Square Park one morning for coffee (there’s this little cart guy who makes incredible breakfast sandwiches), then caught the 6 train at Union Square to head uptown for meetings. The whole thing felt effortless in that rare New York way. And here’s something most people don’t realize: being on 13th Street means you’re close to some of the best under-the-radar restaurants in the city. I stumbled into this tiny Korean place three blocks away that doesn’t even have a proper sign—absolutely incredible.

The hotel itself has this solid, no-nonsense vibe that I really appreciated. The lobby’s got that modern Hyatt feel without being sterile, and check-in was refreshingly quick (I arrived around 3 PM on a Thursday, so maybe I got lucky). My room was on the 8th floor facing Fourth Avenue—not the quietest, but the soundproofing was actually pretty decent. What I loved was how the room felt bigger than typical Manhattan standards, with a window that actually opened a crack for some real air. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, with good water pressure and those little touches that make you feel like they thought it through. Honestly, after staying in some cramped Midtown boxes, having space to actually unpack felt luxurious. The fitness center is small but gets the job done—I used it around 7 AM and had it mostly to myself, which was perfect for a quick workout before exploring the city.

Here’s the thing about this place: it’s not trying to be the flashiest hotel in Manhattan, and that’s exactly why it works. You’re paying for a solid 4-star experience in one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the city. I could grab coffee at Union Square, walk to the High Line, hit up Strand Bookstore, or jump on practically any subway line—all without feeling like I was fighting tourist crowds every step of the way. The staff seemed to get that too; they were helpful without being overly formal, more like “yeah, we know you’ve got places to be” than “welcome to our palace.” For the price point and location, especially if you’re someone who wants to actually experience different parts of Manhattan rather than just staying in the Times Square bubble, this place delivers exactly what you need.

We have stayed in many places in nyc to visit our daughter who lives near NYU. This place is by far the best place closest to her. Others are either tiny rooms or desperately need to be updated.
