NoMo SoHo Overview
You know what caught me off guard about NoMo SoHo? Walking up to 9 Crosby Street, I almost missed it entirely – the entrance is sort of understated in that deliberate New York way, tucked between the cast-iron buildings that make this little pocket of SoHo feel more residential than touristy. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the chaos of Broadway, but Crosby Street has this quieter energy that honestly makes you forget you’re in the middle of Manhattan. The hotel itself feels like someone took a boutique concept and actually followed through on it – the lobby has this moody, almost speakeasy vibe with dark wood and brass fixtures that don’t scream “Instagram moment” but somehow end up being pretty photogenic anyway.
What really works here is how they’ve nailed that balance between feeling local and still being, well, a hotel. The rooms have this industrial-chic thing going on – exposed brick, high ceilings, windows that actually open (which is rarer than you’d think in NYC hotels). I stayed on the fourth floor and could hear the occasional street noise, but it’s the good kind – delivery trucks in the early morning, people walking to work – not the honking nightmare you get closer to Canal Street. The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood too, which matters when you’re asking about where to grab coffee that isn’t Starbucks or which gallery openings are worth checking out. They pointed me toward this little wine bar on Spring Street that I never would’ve found otherwise.
Here’s the thing though – it’s not perfect, and that’s actually part of what I liked about it. The elevators are tiny (classic NYC building problem), and if you’re coming with huge suitcases, you might want to pack lighter. Check-in was smooth, but the lobby gets pretty busy around 6 PM when everyone’s coming back from wandering around the neighborhood. But honestly? The location more than makes up for any minor inconveniences. You can walk to Nolita for dinner, hit the shops on Spring Street without dealing with the SoHo crowds, and you’re close enough to Little Italy that you can actually smell the garlic from some of the restaurants on summer evenings when the windows are open. The whole area feels like what people imagine when they think of living in New York – narrow streets, good coffee shops, art galleries you can actually afford to browse in. It’s definitely more of a “let’s explore the city” kind of place than a “let’s hang out at the hotel” kind of place, but that’s exactly what you want in SoHo.
