So I’ve stayed at this Fairfield by Marriott on West 40th a few times now, and honestly? It’s one of those places that just gets it right without trying too hard. You know how some hotels in Times Square feel like they’re screaming “TOURIST!” at you from the moment you walk in? This one doesn’t do that. It sits right in Hell’s Kitchen — which, despite the dramatic name, is actually this great neighborhood where real New Yorkers live alongside the Broadway crowd.

The thing about staying here is you’re literally a block away from all the Times Square madness, but you can actually escape it. Walk west instead of east when you leave the hotel, and suddenly you’re on these quieter streets with proper delis and that little pocket park on 42nd where locals walk their dogs. I mean, you’ll still hear the occasional siren (it’s Manhattan, come on), but the rooms are surprisingly well-insulated. The building itself is newer, so you don’t get those paper-thin walls you find in some of the older Midtown places. What really sold me on this spot was the staff — they actually know the neighborhood. Last time I was there, the front desk guy told me about this Ethiopian place on 46th that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being the best meal of my trip.

The rooms themselves are exactly what you’d expect from a good Marriott property, but with these nice touches that feel thoughtful rather than fancy for the sake of it. The beds are properly comfortable (not too soft, not like sleeping on concrete), and there’s enough space to actually open your suitcase without doing some weird hotel room dance around the furniture. The bathrooms are clean and modern — nothing Instagram-worthy, but you’re not going to be telling horror stories about them either. What I really appreciate is that they get the little practical stuff right: good water pressure, outlets where you actually need them, and blackout curtains that work. Also, the elevators are fast, which matters more than you’d think when you’re running late for a show. You’re paying for the location here, obviously — this is Times Square adjacent, so don’t expect a bargain. But for what you get, especially compared to some of the tourist traps in the immediate area, it feels fair. Plus, you can walk to basically everything: Broadway theaters, decent restaurants, the subway lines that’ll take you anywhere else you want to go in the city.

  My room had a surprisingly great view! The location was absolutely perfect for everything I wanted to enjoy, in the short time I had in NYC. The breakfast was so cute, I loved it and felt looked after. Staff were all so kind and helpful. When I arrived, I was allowed to use the bathroom to freshen up after my long haul flight from Australia, before leaving my bags at reception so I could make the most of my day before check-in time. Reception can arrange your airport taxi at any time prior to the day you leave, if you already know your flight home; they can also recommend what time you should get it. Would stay here again for sure. Aircon worked well. Space was good. Comfort good. Bathroom good 🙂
