TRYP by Wyndham New York City Times Square – Midtown Overview
You know what struck me first about the TRYP on West 35th? It actually feels like a proper New York hotel without trying too hard to be trendy. I mean, it’s wedged right into Hell’s Kitchen – which, honestly, is exactly where you want to be if you’re doing the whole Times Square thing but don’t want to pay those insane Broadway corridor prices.
The location is pretty clever when you think about it. You’re literally a five-minute walk from all the Times Square chaos, but far enough down 35th that you’re not dealing with the tourist mobs every time you step outside. I’ve walked past those street vendors on 9th Avenue more times than I can count, and there’s something reassuring about having actual neighborhood spots nearby – like that little bodega on the corner that stays open forever, or the way you can actually hear yourself think once you’re a block away from the madness. The hotel itself has this clean, modern vibe that doesn’t scream “corporate chain” even though, well, it technically is one. Check-in was surprisingly smooth (I was expecting typical midtown stress), and the lobby has these big windows that let you people-watch without getting swept up in the sidewalk traffic.
What really works here is how it splits the difference between location and sanity. Sure, you’ll hear some street noise – it’s 35th Street, not a monastery – but nothing like what you’d get if you were staying right on the Deuce. The rooms are solid, nothing fancy but everything you need, and honestly the beds are better than I expected for a 4-star spot in this price range. I stayed during one of those brutal August weeks when the city feels like a sauna, and the AC actually kept up, which… if you’ve spent a summer in New York, you know that’s not always a given. The elevators move fast too, which sounds minor until you’re running late for a show and there are twenty other people trying to get downstairs.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t the kind of place where you’re going to hang out in the lobby all day Instagram-ing your coffee. It’s more like a really good home base. You can walk to Port Authority in ten minutes if you need to catch a bus, hit up the theater district without taking the subway, and when you’re done with all that tourist stuff, you can grab dinner somewhere in Hell’s Kitchen that doesn’t have a Times Square markup. I actually ended up at this little Thai place on 10th Avenue that the front desk guy recommended – total neighborhood spot, amazing food, the kind of find that makes you feel like you’re getting the real New York experience alongside all the obvious stuff. The hotel works because it gets out of your way but gives you exactly what you need to make the most of being in the middle of everything.

Centrally located in the city, there is ease of access to any transportation hub. The location felt safe and was quite quiet for the city. The room was of decent size, with good windows and light.

The room was on the larger size, especially for nyc. We’re a family of three with a teen and we had space to get dressed and even do work at the desk in the room.
