Walking up to it on 47th Street, you can actually feel the theater district energy – I mean, you’re literally surrounded by Broadway marquees, and there’s this constant hum of people heading to shows. The building itself has this classic New York vibe, sort of Art Deco meets practical hospitality, which honestly makes sense since it’s been around since the 1930s and has housed everyone from struggling actors to theater producers over the decades.

The rooms are what I’d call “smart small” – they’ve clearly figured out how to make limited square footage work without feeling cramped. The beds are actually comfortable (I was skeptical given some of the older NYC hotels I’ve stayed in), and here’s something you don’t always get in Times Square: the windows have decent soundproofing. I mean, you’ll still hear sirens and the occasional late-night reveler, but it’s not like you’re sleeping on the sidewalk. The bathrooms are compact but functional, with surprisingly good water pressure – honestly, after a day of walking around Manhattan, that hot shower hits different. One thing though: if you’re the type who spreads out with luggage everywhere, you’ll need to be strategic about space.

What really sets the Edison apart is how it sits right in the sweet spot of theater district accessibility. You can walk to pretty much any Broadway show in under five minutes, and I’m talking about a real New York walk, not that tourist shuffle. The subway access is solid too – you’ve got the N, Q, R, W, S, and 7 trains all within a couple blocks, so getting downtown or up to Central Park is straightforward. The staff actually knows the neighborhood – when I asked about dinner spots that weren’t total tourist traps, the front desk guy pointed me toward some genuinely good places on 9th Avenue that locals actually eat at. Check-in was smooth, even during what had to be peak theater season, and they seem to have their logistics figured out way better than some of the flashier hotels in the area. Look, it’s not going to win any design awards, and if you want a spa or rooftop bar, you’re looking at the wrong place. But if you want to be in the thick of Broadway magic without paying those ridiculous boutique hotel prices, and you appreciate a place that’s been perfecting the basics for decades rather than chasing trends, the Edison just works.
