MADE Hotel caught me off guard in the best way possible. I mean, you walk down West 29th Street expecting another cookie-cutter Manhattan hotel, and instead you find this place that actually has some personality. The NoMad neighborhood is having this whole moment right now – honestly, it’s one of those areas that feels like real New York without the Times Square chaos, and MADE sits right in the thick of it.

The lobby hits you with this industrial-chic vibe that could easily feel try-hard, but somehow doesn’t. There’s exposed brick, yes, but it’s done thoughtfully – like someone who actually cares about design lived here first. Check-in was surprisingly smooth (I was prepared for the usual NYC hotel attitude), and the staff seemed to know their stuff about the neighborhood. You know what I really appreciated? They didn’t oversell anything. When I asked about parking, they straight-up told me to use the SpotHero app for nearby garages rather than pretending their valet was some amazing deal.

The rooms are smaller than you’d get in, say, Midtown, but that’s the trade-off for being in a neighborhood where you can actually walk to decent coffee that doesn’t cost $8. Mine faced the street side, and while there’s some noise from delivery trucks in the early morning – this is Manhattan, after all – it wasn’t the honking symphony you get closer to the tourist zones. The bathroom surprised me most, actually. Good water pressure (honestly rare in older NYC buildings) and they didn’t go crazy with those tiny boutique soap bottles that run out after one shower. Small thing, but it matters when you’re staying more than a night.

What really sold me on this place was stepping outside and realizing I was a five-minute walk from the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park – not that tourist trap in Times Square, but the actual first one where locals still go. The whole Flatiron District spreads out from here, and you can walk to Union Square, hit up the greenmarket, then wander back through neighborhoods that feel like actual New York instead of a movie set. Plus, you’re close enough to the good subway lines (6 train at 28th Street is right there) without being on top of them.

Look, MADE isn’t trying to be the Plaza or compete with those massive Midtown hotels with doormen in top hats. It’s more like that friend’s apartment you wish you had in the city – comfortable, well-located, and unpretentious. The 8.7 rating makes sense because it delivers on what it promises without the nonsense. If you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere that locals might actually recommend rather than just tourists, this works. Just don’t expect a huge room, and maybe pack earplugs if you’re sensitive to city sounds. But honestly? The location alone makes those minor trade-offs worth it.

  Our stay at MADE Hotel in New York for my daughter’s birthday was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, the hotel exceeded our expectations. The room was beautiful, featuring a private terrace, and it was kept impeccably clean throughout our stay. One of the standout gestures was the incredibly generous late checkout—at 10 PM—which made our final day in the city so much more relaxing.
  
  A huge thank you to Damian, Lucas, and the rest of the team (whose names I sadly can’t recall) for their exceptional hospitality. They were attentive to every detail and made sure all our needs were met. To top it off, upon arrival, the staff left a heartfelt birthday note for my daughter, along with a giant, delicious chocolate chip cookie and a muffin, which added such a special touch to our celebration.
  
  The hotel’s location is perfect for exploring the city. While the immediate neighborhood may not be the liveliest, the subway is conveniently just steps away, making it easy to access all the best spots in New York within minutes.
