The Stone House on Main Street Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Stone House on Main Street, you immediately get why this four-star boutique hotel has such devoted fans. The historic stone facade sits right on North Main Street in Stockton, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just feels right the moment you see it. There’s something about the way the old architecture blends with the carefully maintained details that tells you this isn’t your typical chain hotel experience. The moment you step inside, you sense the care that’s gone into preserving the building’s character while ensuring modern comfort.
Location & Neighborhood
Stockton is one of those charming New Jersey towns that people drive through and immediately want to explore more. You’re literally steps from the Delaware River, and I mean that — you can walk to the water in about two minutes. The town itself has this quiet, almost sleepy quality that couples absolutely love, which explains why it scores so highly for romantic getaways. There’s free parking right there, which might sound mundane but trust me, when you’re exploring this area, having your car sorted without fees or stress makes everything easier.
The Property Experience
What strikes you about this place is how they’ve managed to keep the historic character while making everything feel fresh and comfortable. The stone construction gives each room a unique personality — no two spaces feel exactly alike, and the walls have this substantial, quiet quality you just don’t get in newer buildings. The staff clearly knows their guests well, and you get the sense they’re genuinely invested in making sure your stay works out perfectly. Every detail, from the furnishings to the lighting, has been thoughtfully selected.
Why It Works for Couples
I can see exactly why couples rate this place so highly — there’s an intimacy to the whole experience that larger hotels simply can’t match. The setting feels naturally romantic without being overly fussy about it, and Stockton itself is perfect for those long walks and quiet dinners that make for memorable trips. You’re close enough to Princeton or New Hope if you want more dining options, but honestly, the appeal here is slowing down and enjoying each other’s company in a place that feels genuinely special.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.3 rating isn’t an accident — this is the kind of place that gets the details right in ways that matter to actual travelers. The location consistently scores 9.5 with recent guests, and when you’re there, you understand why. It’s not just about being in a pretty town (though Stockton definitely is), it’s about being in a place where you can actually relax and feel like you’ve stepped away from everything. The combination of historic charm, thoughtful service, and that perfect small-town setting creates something that’s increasingly rare — a hotel experience that feels personal and memorable rather than just efficient.

Cozy home came with all cooking essentials

We had a great stay at The Stone House. The owners have thoughtfully added extras like coffee beans, lotions, shampoo, etc. The beds were very comfortable and it was a perfect house for our group of 6 (3 couples.) We had a delicious dinner at the Sergeantsville Inn and enjoyed exploring nearby New Hope. We highly recommend this home!
