The Ned NoMad Overview

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy hotels in Manhattan, but The Ned NoMad actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. Walking into this place on Broadway, you immediately get that it’s trying to be something different from your typical glitzy Midtown spot. The lobby has this sort of industrial-chic thing going on, all exposed brick and warm lighting, which I know sounds cliché but they pull it off without feeling like they’re trying too hard. You know what really got me though? The staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood. When I asked about good coffee that wasn’t Starbucks, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic list – he told me about this little place on 28th that locals hit up, and he was right.

The rooms are honestly where this place shines. I mean, yes, it’s a 5-star property so you expect certain things, but there’s attention to detail here that goes beyond the usual luxury hotel playbook. The beds are phenomenal (I’m picky about this stuff), and the blackout curtains actually work – which is crucial when you’re dealing with Broadway’s neon situation outside. Speaking of which, if you’re sensitive to city noise, request a room facing away from Broadway. It’s not terrible, but you’ll definitely hear the occasional siren or late-night delivery truck. The bathrooms are spacious with really good water pressure, and they stock decent toiletries that don’t smell like generic hotel soap. What I particularly appreciated was the workspace setup – the desk is actually big enough to spread out laptop, papers, whatever, and there are plenty of outlets positioned where you’d actually use them.

Here’s the thing about NoMad that makes this location work so well: you’re in the sweet spot between the chaos of Herald Square and the stuffiness of some other Manhattan neighborhoods. Madison Square Park is literally a two-minute walk, which is perfect for morning runs or just escaping the concrete for a bit. You’ve got the whole food scene around here – Eleven Madison Park if you’re feeling fancy (and can get a reservation), but also solid everyday spots like that excellent ramen place on 29th. The subway situation is pretty ideal too – you can walk to Herald Square for multiple train lines, or hit up the 28th Street stations. I stayed here during restaurant week and the concierge actually knew which places still had availability, plus gave me realistic timing expectations for getting around the city. The only minor gripe I have is that the elevators can be slow during peak times, but that’s pretty much every hotel in the city. With an 8.6 rating, they’re clearly doing something right, and after spending four nights there, I get it. It’s not trying to be the flashiest place in town – it’s just trying to be really good at what it does.
