The Melrose Hotel Overview
First Impressions
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to The Melrose Hotel on East 149th Street. The Bronx doesn’t always get the love it deserves from travelers, but this three-star gem really surprised me. The building has this solid, no-nonsense feel that immediately puts you at ease — you know what I mean? It’s not trying to be something it’s not, which I actually found refreshing after staying at some overly flashy places in Manhattan.
Location That Actually Works
Here’s the thing about this spot — recent guests have been raving about the location, and I get why. You’re positioned perfectly to explore the real New York, away from the tourist crowds but still connected to everything. The subway access is genuinely good (something that matters way more than fancy lobby marble when you’re actually traveling), and I loved being able to walk around a neighborhood that feels authentic. Couples seem to particularly appreciate this area — there’s something romantic about discovering parts of the city that most visitors never see.
The Room Experience
My room was exactly what I needed after long days exploring the city. Clean, comfortable, and — this might sound small but it matters — the air conditioning actually worked properly. The bed was surprisingly comfortable for a mid-range hotel, and I slept better than I expected. Sure, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or designer furniture, but everything functions well and feels maintained. The windows let in good natural light, which honestly makes such a difference when you’re trying to shake off jet lag or just want to feel human again.
Service and Atmosphere
The staff here really knows what they’re doing. I mean, they’re not hovering over you with white gloves, but when you need something, they’re helpful and actually seem to care. There’s this relaxed professionalism that I appreciated — they treat you like a person, not just another reservation. The lobby area has this comfortable, lived-in quality where you can actually sit and plan your day without feeling like you’re taking up premium real estate. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in New York will tell you is basically a miracle.
Why Guests Love It
What really struck me about The Melrose Hotel is how it delivers on the basics while giving you something extra — that authentic New York experience you can’t manufacture. The 8.4 rating makes perfect sense when you consider what you’re actually getting: a solid base for exploring the city, genuine value for your money, and a chance to stay somewhere that locals would actually recommend. It’s the kind of place where you end up having better conversations with fellow travelers because everyone’s there for the right reasons, not just Instagram shots.
Early hotels booking in New York secures jazz supper clubs, skyline helicopter tours, and Hudson sailing picnics.

Reviews of The Melrose Hotel

The hotel is brand new and clean. Guests are well behaved and staff are approachable, responsive and helpful. The hotel is close to the number 2 and 5 trains. There is a large secure supermarket with a friendly owner across the road as well as a Dunkin and burger king. Avoid the delis and walking around at dusk.

Hotel was newly remodeled and close to subway. Lots of reasonable shopping in the neighborhood.

The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was spacious, and even a had a bathtub, which I appreciated. Most hotels that I've visited only have a shower with limited space.

The hotel is very clean. Staff are very nice. The room was great. My only problem was outside the hotel- as a Bronx native I am used to it but it was extreme around there. People strung out on drugs everywhere. Did not feel safe going out for a walk at night so I stood inside.

The ladies at the desk were very friendly and helpful. For everything that didn’t have they had a store within walking distance to provide it. Dunking Donuts across the street, a grocery store, restaurants. The parking garage is on top of the grocery store.
