Hyatt Place New York/Midtown-South Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of Midtown hotels, and honestly? The Hyatt Place on 36th Street gets it right in ways that surprised me. You walk in and there’s this clean, modern lobby that doesn’t try too hard – none of that overdone marble nonsense you see everywhere else. The front desk staff actually seemed to know what they were talking about when I asked about getting to Brooklyn Bridge (take the 6 train from 33rd, not the mess that is Herald Square).
What really sold me on this place was the location, and I mean the real location benefits, not just “close to everything.” You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Empire State Building, which sounds touristy until you realize how easy it makes meeting people – everyone knows where you are. But here’s the thing locals know: you’re also right near Koreatown on 32nd Street, which means late-night Korean BBQ when you inevitably get hungry at 11 PM. The hotel sits on a relatively quiet stretch of 36th Street too, so you’re not dealing with the Herald Square chaos, but you can still grab the B, D, F, N, Q, R, or W trains at 34th Street without breaking a sweat.
The rooms themselves are what I’d call “thoughtfully basic” – they’ve got everything you actually need without the clutter. The bed was genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and there’s a decent workspace if you need to get stuff done. The bathroom’s compact but functional, with good water pressure – honestly, in New York, that’s half the battle right there. What impressed me was the little stuff: USB ports where you actually need them, a coffee maker that doesn’t suck, and blackout curtains that work. You know what else? The elevators are fast, which matters more than you’d think when you’re running late for dinner reservations. I stayed there during a busy week in fall, and while the lobby got crowded around check-in time, it never felt chaotic. The staff kept things moving, and I appreciated that they didn’t hover but were easy to find when needed. One small thing – if you’re driving, don’t even think about street parking around there. There’s a garage nearby, but it’ll cost you. Most people take the subway anyway, which is exactly what you should do.
