First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Mulberry on a busy afternoon, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star spot tucked right into the heart of Chinatown. The building itself has this understated charm — nothing flashy, but there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try too hard. The lobby is compact but welcoming, and you can immediately hear the energy of Mulberry Street just outside. What struck me right away was how the staff seemed genuinely happy to see guests, not just going through the motions like at some of the bigger chain hotels nearby.

Location & Neighborhood

You know what’s great about staying here? You’re literally in the thick of one of Manhattan’s most authentic neighborhoods. I mean, step outside and you’re surrounded by dim sum spots, traditional tea shops, and those little markets where locals actually shop for groceries. It’s a completely different vibe from Midtown — more real, if that makes sense. The subway connections are actually pretty solid too; you can walk to Canal Street station in about three minutes, which gets you anywhere in the city without much hassle. Plus, Little Italy is right next door, and SoHo’s trendy boutiques are just a short stroll north.

The Room Experience

The rooms at Hotel Mulberry are what I’d call efficiently designed — they’re not huge, but honestly, this is New York, so you’re not expecting a palace anyway. What impressed me was how thoughtfully everything was laid out; there’s actually space to unpack your suitcase, which is more than I can say for some places I’ve stayed in the city. The beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms are clean and modern. The windows face either Mulberry Street (where you get that authentic street buzz) or the quieter courtyard side — both have their charm depending on what kind of sleeper you are.

Dining & Local Flavors

Here’s where staying at this hotel really pays off — you don’t need to venture far for incredible food. The hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, but honestly, why would you want one when you’re surrounded by some of the city’s best Chinese cuisine? I grabbed breakfast at a little bakery two doors down that serves these amazing pork buns, and dinner was at a family-run Cantonese place around the corner that’s been there for decades. The front desk staff actually gave me recommendations that felt like insider tips, not just the usual tourist spots.

What really sets Hotel Mulberry apart is this perfect balance of being in the action without feeling overwhelmed by it. Couples seem to especially appreciate the intimate neighborhood feel — it’s romantic in a very New York way, walking these historic streets at night with all the red lanterns glowing. The 8.5 rating makes sense when you consider you’re getting genuine character, a prime location, and solid comfort without paying those crazy Midtown prices. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re experiencing the real city, not just visiting it.

  We felt like we were walking into our own apartment when we got off the elevator. Very quiet, only two rooms on the 12th(?) floor. Bathrobes were a very nice touch !
  The balcony was why I booked this room, it was wonderful; huge and not too high up. Great views of the surrounding buildings and park below. A good place to escape in the middle of the night for a breath of fresh air . Room was clean and had great hot water & pressure. Area very calm, residential, safe. Subway close by .
