Hotel Mulberry Overview
You know what? I almost walked right past Hotel Mulberry the first time I tried to find it. The entrance is tucked between a dumpling shop and one of those cramped souvenir stores on Mulberry Street, and honestly, that’s part of its charm. This little 3-star spot sits right in the thick of Chinatown’s chaos, but somehow manages to feel like a quiet refuge once you step inside. The lobby’s actually pretty elegant for a place this size – dark wood, clean lines, none of that fake-fancy stuff you get at some boutique hotels.
Here’s the thing about staying here: you’re literally in the middle of everything that makes Chinatown worth visiting, but you’re not dealing with the tourist trap nonsense. I mean, sure, you’ll hear the occasional delivery truck rumbling down Mulberry at 6 AM, and during Chinese New Year the whole neighborhood gets pretty intense, but most of the time it’s surprisingly peaceful. The rooms are smaller than what you’d get in Midtown (obviously – it’s Chinatown), but they’re thoughtfully designed. Good blackout curtains, which you’ll appreciate since the streetlights are pretty bright. The bathrooms are compact but well-appointed, and the water pressure is actually solid – something I’ve learned not to take for granted in older NYC buildings.
What really sold me on this place is how the staff actually knows the neighborhood. The front desk guy – I think his name was David – didn’t just give me the usual tourist map. He told me which dim sum place has the shortest lines on Sunday mornings (it’s Nom Wah Tea Parlor, but go before 10 AM), and which streets to avoid if you’re trying to get to the subway during rush hour. Little Italy is literally across the street, so you can grab decent Italian food if you get tired of dumplings, though honestly, why would you? The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but you’re surrounded by some of the best cheap eats in the city. There’s this hole-in-the-wall noodle shop two doors down that stays open until like 2 AM – perfect for those late-night cravings.
The 8.5 rating makes sense to me. It’s not luxury, but it’s exactly what it should be: clean, comfortable, and perfectly positioned. You’re a five-minute walk from the 6 train at Canal Street, and if you don’t mind a slightly longer walk, you can hit the N/Q/R/W lines too. Parking is basically impossible unless you want to pay $40 a day at one of the nearby garages, so just take the subway or grab an Uber. The whole area gets pretty quiet after 10 PM except on weekends, when you’ll get some spillover from the bars on nearby Mott Street – but it’s more lively than obnoxious.

We felt like we were walking into our own apartment when we got off the elevator. Very quiet, only two rooms on the 12th(?) floor. Bathrobes were a very nice touch !
The balcony was why I booked this room, it was wonderful; huge and not too high up. Great views of the surrounding buildings and park below. A good place to escape in the middle of the night for a breath of fresh air . Room was clean and had great hot water & pressure. Area very calm, residential, safe. Subway close by .William from United States (9/10)
