Hilton Garden Inn New York Times Square South Overview
Honestly, when I first walked up to the Hilton Garden Inn on 37th Street, I wasn’t expecting much – you know how Times Square hotels can be, all flash and tourist traps. But this place actually surprised me. It sits right in Hell’s Kitchen, which means you’re close enough to all the Broadway madness but far enough south that you’re not drowning in Elmo costumes and street performers at 2 AM.
The lobby has this clean, modern vibe that feels refreshingly uncluttered after battling the sensory overload outside. Check-in was smooth – I mean, it’s Hilton, so they’ve got their systems down. What I really appreciated was how the front desk staff actually knew the neighborhood. When I asked about good food spots, they didn’t just rattle off chain restaurants but mentioned this little Colombian place on 9th Avenue that locals actually go to. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star property – nothing fancy, but everything works. The beds are comfortable (seriously, after walking 20,000 steps around Manhattan, you’ll sleep like a baby), and the bathrooms are modern with decent water pressure. I was on the 8th floor facing west, and while you can hear the city hum, it’s not the chaotic street noise you get closer to the actual Times Square intersection.
Here’s what sold me on this place though – the location is actually perfect for exploring both Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen without feeling like you’re staying in a tourist fishbowl. You’re a quick walk to the Theater District, but you can also stroll up 9th or 10th Avenue and find those hole-in-the-wall restaurants and bars that make NYC special. The subway situation is decent too – Port Authority is walkable (though honestly, who loves Port Authority?), and you’ve got multiple train lines within a few blocks. Parking is typical Manhattan expensive if you’re driving, but there’s a garage nearby. One thing to note – this area gets busy during theater hours, so if you’re coming back around 7 PM on a weeknight, expect crowds. But by 10 PM, it calms down significantly. The hotel’s little market downstairs is clutch for grabbing snacks or a quick breakfast without paying Times Square prices. Overall, it’s one of those places that just works – not Instagram-perfect, but solid, comfortable, and staffed by people who seem to actually care about doing their jobs well. For the price point in this part of Manhattan, honestly, you could do a lot worse.

Beautiful facility. Great location.

Room was typically NYC size (aka cramped) but complete and well insulated from above/below so pretty quiet. Bathroom was exceptional – shower, sink, hairdryer, good lighting. Bed was comfortable but filled the floorspace so we ended up using the bed for sitting. Staff was great. Place was pretty clean and modern. I was surprised there was a mini-fridge and microwave in the desk space. Desk and lighting in room was pretty good. Fourteenth floor was pretty good for avoiding street noise. Elevators all worked all the time and were fast. We had no problem getting a taxi or Uber to the front door. Penn station is in walking distance so our trip to Long Island was convenient.

It was a 25 dollar buffet or high prices a la cart and no bagels. Fruit not very fresh.

Proximity to the Javitz center and NY Penn was amazing! Grand Central isn't too far either. The reception during check in was super sweet to me and it wasn't just due to my diamond member status.
