Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of Marriott properties over the years, but this Fairfield Inn honestly surprised me in the best way possible. You know that stretch of West 36th between 8th and 9th Avenue? It’s actually one of those pockets of Hell’s Kitchen where you get the real New York energy without feeling like you’re drowning in tourist chaos. The hotel sits right there in the thick of it, and I mean that as a compliment – you’re close enough to Times Square that you can walk there in about eight minutes (I timed it), but far enough away that you’re not hearing those awful Elmo impersonators through your window at midnight.

The building itself has this solid, unpretentious feel that I really appreciated. When you walk in, there’s no marble waterfall or over-the-top lobby trying to impress you – just clean lines, comfortable seating, and staff who actually seem to know what they’re doing. My room was on the seventh floor, and honestly, the soundproofing was way better than I expected for Midtown. Sure, you’ll hear some street noise if you’re facing 36th Street, but it’s that normal city hum, not the jarring honking and sirens you get closer to the theater district. The beds are those crisp white Marriott standards – you know the ones – and the bathroom was small but efficiently designed (which, let’s be real, is all you need when you’re spending most of your time exploring the city). What I really loved was the little kitchenette setup; having a mini-fridge and microwave meant I could grab decent coffee and pastries from Joe Coffee on 39th Street and actually enjoy them properly in the morning instead of rushing out with a paper cup.

The neighborhood is where this place really shines, though. You’re literally surrounded by some of the best hole-in-the-wall spots – there’s this incredible Korean BBQ place called Woorijip just a few blocks east that locals line up for, and if you walk five minutes north, you hit Restaurant Row where you can find everything from pre-theater dining to late-night ramen. The 34th Street subway station is close enough that you’re connected to basically everywhere, but Port Authority is just far enough away that you don’t deal with that particular brand of chaos unless you want to. I stayed here during a pretty busy week in October, and while the elevators got a bit crowded during morning rush (around 8-9 AM), it never felt overwhelming. The front desk folks were solid too – they actually knew the area well enough to give me directions to a decent late-night pharmacy when I needed one, which sounds small but makes a real difference when you’re dealing with jet lag and need actual human help, not just a printed map of tourist attractions.
