Walking up to Northern Lights Mansion on West 122nd Street, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical Manhattan hotel experience. The building has this stately presence that fits perfectly into Harlem’s historic streetscape — it’s actually a beautifully restored mansion that feels more like staying at a sophisticated friend’s place than checking into a standard three-star property. The entrance draws you in with its classic New York architecture, and honestly, the whole vibe is refreshingly intimate compared to the massive hotel towers you’ll find further south.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re right in the heart of Harlem, which means you’re surrounded by incredible jazz history, amazing food, and a neighborhood energy that’s completely authentic. Marcus Garvey Park is just a few blocks away, perfect for morning walks, and you’re within easy reach of the legendary Apollo Theater. The subway connections are solid too; you can hop on the 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 trains and be in Midtown in about 20 minutes. What really struck me is how this area comes alive in the evenings — there’s live music spilling out of venues, the aroma of soul food everywhere, and a community feel that’s hard to find in touristy parts of the city.

The accommodations maintain that mansion character beautifully — high ceilings, original architectural details, and windows that actually let in natural light (you know how rare that can be in NYC). My room had this cozy yet refined feel, with period-appropriate furnishings that didn’t feel stuffy or overdone. The bathrooms are updated but respectful of the building’s heritage, and I mean, there’s something special about staying somewhere with actual personality instead of cookie-cutter hotel design. Storage space is decent, though you’re still in Manhattan so don’t expect walk-in closets.

Dining & Amenities

While Northern Lights Mansion keeps things relatively simple on the amenities front — this is a three-star property after all — what they do offer feels thoughtful and well-executed. The common areas have this welcoming atmosphere where you might actually want to hang out and plan your day. Breakfast options are solid, though I’d honestly recommend exploring the neighborhood for food — you’re surrounded by some of the city’s best soul food joints and Caribbean spots. The staff really knows the area well and can point you toward hidden gems that most tourists never discover.

  A wonderful atmosphere, no issues with free street parking, very clean and cozy.

  The staff of the facility is amazing, always willing to help and give instructions. They will help with anything about NYC as well. The location is a little far north of Manhattan (where the major tourist sites are) but the building is between two major metro lines which will take you anywhere in new York in within some minutes. The house is old fashioned but the inside is really modern, which gives you the feeling of staying in a true new Yorker house. The kitchen is really really modern, which can save you a lot of money cooking your food or having your breakfast at home. They also have an amazing coffee machine and have water as courtesy, which was amazing, had coffee every morning there and could enjoy the rest of the day city walking. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the heater worked really fine even with a cold weather in NY. They had everything you needed, shampoo, conditioner, hair drier, clean towels everyday.

  The room was great and definitely worth the price. The room was VERY spacious – VERY. The staff was friendly – this was probably the best part of my stay. The location was AMAZING – a short walk from the train station and in a very safe environment.
