NYC Empire Apartments Overview
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from NYC Empire Apartments when I first walked up to 38 West 31st Street, but this place actually surprised me. It’s tucked right in NoMad – and I mean literally in the thick of it, not some marketing department’s version of “nearby.” You’re basically a two-minute walk from the Empire State Building, which sounds touristy until you realize how convenient it makes everything else. The whole Koreatown strip is right there, Herald Square’s chaos is manageable from this distance, and honestly, you can walk to Penn Station with a suitcase without wanting to die.
The building itself has that pre-war New York thing going on – you know, the kind where the elevator makes you question your life choices but the bones are solid. I mean, it’s a 3-star spot, so don’t expect marble lobbies or whatever, but the apartment-style setup actually works really well if you’re staying more than a night or two. Having a little kitchen area makes a huge difference when you’re sick of spending $20 on mediocre sandwiches. The rooms are… well, they’re New York-sized, which means you’ll get cozy with your luggage, but the windows are decent and you’re not staring at a brick wall three feet away. Some units face the street side – it gets a bit noisy with the traffic and the occasional late-night Broadway crowd wandering around, but nothing worse than most Manhattan hotels. Actually, I kind of liked hearing the city hum outside.
What really sold me on this place was the staff knowing their stuff about the neighborhood. The guy at the front desk steered me toward this incredible Korean BBQ place on 32nd that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I needed to find a pharmacy at 10 PM (because of course I did), he knew exactly which Duane Reade stays open late. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t Google. The 7.3 rating makes sense – it’s not going to blow your mind, and yeah, the WiFi gets spotty sometimes and the shower pressure is what it is, but for the price point and location, it delivers what you need. Plus, being in actual apartments instead of tiny hotel boxes means you can spread out a little, maybe even invite someone over without sitting on the bed because there’s nowhere else to go. If you’re looking for something in midtown that doesn’t feel like a corporate chain but won’t break the bank either, this place gets the job done pretty well.

Location was prime and the apartment was perfect for what we needed as a family trip. We needed the kitchenette, and also had a lot of privacy on our floor. There were no disruptions and check in and out was very easy. I would recommend this place to anyone who is traveling on a budget and wants to save some money on meals & transportation since it is equipped with cooking and dining supplies and is very close to a subway station that has access to several train lines.
