The Mayfair Hotel Times Square, Ascend Hotel Collection Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to The Mayfair on 49th Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place smack in the middle of Times Square chaos. But you know what? This little spot actually surprised me. It’s tucked right between all the tourist madness but somehow feels like you’ve found a quieter pocket of the city. The lobby’s got this classic New York vibe – not trying too hard to be fancy, just solid and comfortable. Check-in was smooth (I mean, the desk staff actually seemed to know what they were doing, which isn’t always a given in this neighborhood), and I appreciated that they didn’t try to upsell me on a bunch of stuff I didn’t need.
Here’s the thing about staying right here – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the heart of Times Square, but you’re on the right side of it where you can actually escape when you need to. I’d duck out in the mornings and grab coffee from that little place on the corner of 8th Avenue, then come back to find my room cleaned and ready. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re New York hotel rooms, so don’t expect massive space, but they’re thoughtfully laid out. Mine had a surprisingly comfortable bed (honestly, I slept better than I expected given all the sirens and general city noise outside), and the bathroom was recently updated – you can tell they’ve put some money into keeping things fresh. The air conditioning actually works, which is more important than you might think during those brutal summer months when the city turns into a sauna.
What really won me over was the little details that show someone’s paying attention. The elevators are quick – no standing around forever with a bunch of cranky tourists. The WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes. And here’s something I really appreciated: the front desk genuinely knows the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the High Line without dealing with subway construction, they knew exactly which route to suggest and even mentioned that Wednesday afternoons are way less crowded. That’s the kind of local knowledge you want. Sure, you’ll hear some street noise (it’s Times Square, not a meditation retreat), but it quiets down after midnight, and honestly, there’s something kind of energizing about falling asleep to the sounds of the city. For what you’re paying and where you’re staying, The Mayfair delivers exactly what it promises – a clean, comfortable base camp for exploring the city without the premium price tag of those flashier hotels six blocks south.

Staff were friendly and place was clean. In an overpriced city like New York it was a decent find. I would recommend people stay there if you want to be in the heart of New York Times Square area. Found it very easy to get around and to get to the subway.
