U Hotel Fifth Avenue, Empire State Building Overview
Honestly, when I first walked up to U Hotel Fifth Avenue, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a 3-star place right in the thick of Midtown Manhattan. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little spot at 373 Fifth Avenue totally proves that point. I mean, you’re literally staring up at the Empire State Building from the sidewalk – not “views of” or “near” the building, but actually right there where you can practically touch it. The entrance is pretty understated, which I actually appreciated after dealing with all the tourist chaos on Fifth Avenue. Check-in was surprisingly smooth too, though I’d recommend avoiding the 3-4 PM rush when all the tour groups seem to descend on the area.
What really won me over was how the hotel manages to feel like a quiet refuge despite being in one of the busiest spots in the city. The rooms are compact – well, this is Manhattan, so that’s hardly shocking – but they’re thoughtfully designed in a way that makes the space work. The beds are actually comfortable, which honestly can be hit or miss in this price range, and the blackout curtains are a godsend if you’re trying to sleep past sunrise. The bathroom situation is tight but functional, and the water pressure is better than half the places I’ve stayed in the city. You can hear some street noise, especially if you’re facing Fifth Avenue, but it’s more of that classic New York hum than anything jarring. I found it kind of soothing after a while – like the city’s lullaby, you know?
The location though, that’s where this place really shines. You’re a two-minute walk from the Empire State Building entrance (skip the crowds and go at sunset), and Bryant Park is just a few blocks down – perfect for grabbing coffee and actually sitting somewhere green for five minutes. The subway situation is fantastic too; you’ve got the B, D, F, M lines at 34th-Herald Square, plus the 6 at 33rd Street, so getting anywhere in the city is pretty painless. There’s a decent deli right on the corner for breakfast if you don’t want to deal with hotel prices, and if you walk toward Broadway, you’ll hit all those massive chain stores and tourist spots – though honestly, I preferred ducking into the smaller streets toward Lexington where things calm down a bit. For what you’re paying, especially considering you’re in prime Midtown real estate, it’s actually a solid deal. I’ve seen friends drop twice as much for hotels with worse locations and basically the same amenities. It’s not fancy, but it’s clean, comfortable, and puts you right in the heart of everything without breaking the bank.

I really liked the cleanliness and at the reception there were 3 people who attended, early, afternoon and night. the first two were very friendly and helpful, the third, who served late at night, was a bit rude, but the service in general is very good

Staff absolutely fantastic.
Late flight but there was no problem of storing our baggage. Asked to order a taxi back to JFK the hotel provided their own transport, same price but far better comfort, would definitely recommend the hotel transport
