Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to the Renaissance on 35th Street – I mean, it’s tucked between a bunch of other buildings in that part of Midtown where everything sort of blends together. But stepping inside? Complete different story. The lobby has this warm, sophisticated vibe that actually makes you want to linger instead of just rushing through to the elevators like most Manhattan hotels.
What really won me over was how the staff seemed to genuinely get what travelers need. Check-in was smooth (even during that crazy afternoon rush when half of Penn Station seemed to be dragging suitcases down the block), and they actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give real recommendations beyond the usual Times Square tourist traps. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Herald Square, which is clutch for shopping or grabbing the subway, and Penn Station is so close you can practically roll your suitcase there without breaking a sweat. The rooms themselves are what I’d call “New York spacious” – meaning you won’t be bumping into furniture constantly, but don’t expect to do yoga on the floor either. The beds are legitimately comfortable though, and the blackout curtains actually work, which is kind of a miracle in a city where there’s always some light bleeding in from somewhere.
Here’s the thing that impressed me most: this place manages to feel like a proper hotel experience without the stuffiness you sometimes get at Manhattan properties. The R Lounge downstairs is perfect for that end-of-day drink when you need to decompress from whatever chaos the city threw at you – not too scene-y, not too quiet, just right. And speaking of practical stuff, the WiFi actually works throughout the building (I was on video calls from my room with zero issues), and there’s a decent fitness center if you’re trying to work off all that amazing food you’ll inevitably eat while you’re here. The location really is the secret weapon though – you’re close enough to walk to the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, or Koreatown for late-night eats, but far enough from the Times Square madness that you won’t be dodging Elmo costumes every time you leave the hotel. I stayed here during fashion week when the city was absolutely bonkers, and coming back to this little oasis each night felt like finding a calm pocket in all that beautiful chaos. It’s one of those places that just works, you know?
