The James New York – NoMad Overview
You know what struck me first about The James New York – NoMad? Walking up to 29th Street, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking – it’s tucked into this quiet block that feels surprisingly residential for Manhattan. But honestly, that’s kind of the point. While everyone’s fighting for rooms near Times Square or in the Village, you’re sitting pretty in NoMad, which locals will tell you is one of those neighborhoods that just keeps getting better.
The lobby has this moody, sophisticated vibe – dark wood, leather seating that actually looks lived-in rather than showroom perfect. I mean, it’s definitely designed, but in a way that feels more like someone’s really expensive apartment than a hotel trying too hard. The staff seemed genuinely happy to be there, which is rarer than you’d think in NYC hotels. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving after 3 PM because they stick pretty firmly to their schedule. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star – well-appointed without being flashy, good water pressure (crucial!), and windows that actually block out street noise. That last part matters because even though 29th Street is relatively quiet, you’re still in Manhattan.
Here’s the thing though – location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned without paying Midtown prices. Madison Square Park is literally two blocks south, and trust me, that little green space becomes your best friend after a day of concrete and crowds. You can walk to the Flatiron Building in about five minutes, Penn Station in ten if you’re catching a train, and the subway situation is solid with the 6 train at 28th Street right there. Plus – and this is something I only figured out after staying there twice – you’re close enough to all the NoMad restaurant action (the original NoMad restaurant is practically next door) but far enough from the Herald Square chaos that you can actually think straight. Parking’s typical Manhattan nightmare pricing, so just embrace the subway or budget for Ubers. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after business hours, which is either perfect for sleeping or a bit dead depending on what you’re after. Overall, it’s one of those places that gets the balance right – nice enough that you feel good about staying there, located well enough that you’re not spending half your vacation on the subway, and priced reasonably enough that you won’t hate yourself when the credit card bill comes.

The room was great. It was large for a city-center hotel and had a table and chairs, which allowed me to work as needed. The room facilities were excellent. the water pressure is really good.
Fiona from United Kingdom (9/10)
Location, value for money
Michelle from United Kingdom (8/10)
The bed was very comfortable and the room was a decent size for New York. The shower too was good and as long as the bed and shower is good I am happy. The room was dated but clean. There was Shampoo, conditioner etc plus the usual other items such as a hairdryer (although this was not the best) and an iron.
