InterContinental New York Times Square, an IHG Hotel Overview
You know what struck me first about the InterContinental in Times Square? It’s actually tucked away on 44th Street instead of right in the chaos – which honestly makes all the difference when you’re trying to get some sleep. I mean, you’re still in the thick of it (literally a two-minute walk to the red steps and all that madness), but you can actually roll your suitcase to the front door without getting stuck behind a family of tourists taking selfies every five feet.
The lobby feels refreshingly grown-up for this part of town. There’s this sort of sophisticated energy that doesn’t scream “tourist hotel,” if that makes sense. Check-in was smooth – they seem to have their act together, probably because they deal with a mix of business travelers and visitors who’ve done their homework. The elevators are fast, which matters more than you’d think when you’re on the 20th floor and running late for a Broadway show. Speaking of which, the theater district is right there – I walked to three different shows during my stay and the longest walk was maybe eight minutes. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star place, nothing groundbreaking but thoughtfully designed with good lighting (seriously, hotel lighting is usually terrible but they got it right). The beds are comfortable, and the windows actually open a bit, which is rare in newer hotels. You might catch some street noise, but it’s more like the gentle hum of the city rather than honking chaos – Hell’s Kitchen has mellowed out a lot from its grittier days.
What really works about this place is the location knowledge you gain just by staying here. You’re on the same block as some excellent restaurants that tourists walking around Times Square never stumble onto, and the 42nd Street subway station is close enough that you can explore other neighborhoods easily but far enough that you’re not dealing with the Penn Station crowds. The staff actually knows the area – when I asked about good coffee that wasn’t Starbucks, the concierge pointed me toward a little place on 9th Avenue that became my morning routine. Parking is expensive (welcome to Manhattan), but if you’re driving, there are a couple of garages nearby and the valet service is efficient. The fitness center is decent-sized and usually not crowded, especially if you go early morning or late evening. Honestly, for an 8.0 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d expect – solid execution without trying to be flashy, professional service, and a location that puts you right where you want to be without the overwhelming intensity of staying directly on Broadway. It’s the kind of place where you can have a legitimate New York experience without feeling like you’re camping out in a tourist trap.
