Hotel AKA NoMad Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Hotel AKA NoMad, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. Madison Avenue at 28th Street can feel a bit corporate during the day, but step inside and you realize this place actually gets the boutique hotel thing right. The lobby has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look at me” like some of the flashier spots in Midtown, and honestly, that’s refreshing.
What really sold me on this place is how it sits right in the sweet spot of Manhattan geography. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park (yes, that’s still the best one), and when you want to escape the tourist madness, you can duck into the quieter streets of NoMad where locals actually live and work. The Flatiron Building is right there if you want the Instagram shot, but you’re also close enough to walk to the Village or catch a show in the Theater District without feeling like you need to plan a whole expedition. I mean, the 6 train at 28th Street is probably one of the most useful subway stops in the city – it’ll get you pretty much anywhere you want to go.
The rooms themselves are what I’d call grown-up comfortable. They’re not trying to be ultra-modern or aggressively themed, just well-designed spaces with good lighting (thank god – so many hotels get this wrong) and beds that don’t feel like they came from a budget chain. The bathrooms are spacious by New York standards, which… well, you know how that goes. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even though you’re on a busy avenue. The windows must be decent quality because I barely heard the street noise, and in this city, that’s worth its weight in gold. Check-in was smooth too – none of that “your room isn’t ready even though it’s 4 PM” nonsense that drives me crazy at other places.
You know what’s funny? The neighborhood really comes alive in the evening. During the day it’s all business types and tourists heading to the Flatiron, but once the sun goes down, you’ve got great restaurant options within walking distance. Eleven Madison Park is obviously the fancy splurge if you’re celebrating something big, but there are plenty of solid spots that won’t require a second mortgage. The hotel staff seemed to actually know the area well too, which is rarer than you’d think – they pointed me toward a great little wine bar on 27th that I never would have found otherwise.
Look, it’s not the cheapest option in the city, but for a 4-star place in this location, the value makes sense. You’re paying for the convenience of being central without the chaos of Times Square, and the quality is consistent with what you’d expect from the rating. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to feel like you’re staying somewhere with character but doesn’t want to deal with quirky old building problems, this hits that balance pretty well.

The room and beds were very comfortable and the staff was very accommodating. Service requests were answered very promptly. The location was very good as we had appointments in the Mid Town area.
The complimentary water was much appreciated, but why for only one night? And $7 bottled water was ridiculous!John from United Kingdom (8/10)
