Radio Hotel Overview

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Radio Hotel on Amsterdam Avenue – Washington Heights isn’t exactly where most tourists plant their flag, you know? But that’s actually what makes this place kind of brilliant. You’re getting a real slice of New York life up here, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The hotel itself sits right in the heart of the Heights, and once you’re inside, you realize they’ve done something pretty smart with the whole “radio” concept without beating you over the head with it. The lobby has this warm, slightly retro vibe that feels intentional but not gimmicky – think mid-century modern meets neighborhood charm rather than some corporate designer’s idea of “quirky.” Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and the staff actually seemed to know the area well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the usual Times Square tourist traps. The rooms are solid for a 4-star – nothing fancy, but they’re clean, comfortable, and honestly, the beds are better than you’d expect. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, which is saying something for New York.

Here’s the thing about staying in Washington Heights that a lot of people don’t realize – you’re actually in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the city, just without the crowds and inflated prices. Step out of Radio Hotel and you’re surrounded by incredible Dominican food (seriously, the coffee and pastries alone are worth the trip), plus you’ve got Fort Tryon Park just a short walk away if you want to escape the concrete for a bit. The subway situation is pretty decent too – the A train stops right at 181st Street, so you can get down to Midtown in about 30 minutes, maybe 40 during rush hour. And parking, if you’re driving, is actually possible up here, unlike most of Manhattan where you’re looking at $50 a night minimum.

I’ll be honest – this isn’t the kind of place where you’re going to get a rooftop infinity pool or a Michelin-starred restaurant in the lobby. But if you want to experience New York like someone who actually lives here, rather than just passing through the greatest hits, Radio Hotel hits that sweet spot. The 7.7 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect, but it’s genuine, and in a city full of overpriced, underwhelming hotels, that counts for a lot. Plus, your money goes further here, which means you can actually afford to eat well and see shows instead of blowing your budget on a room you’ll barely spend time in anyway.

Great little hotel in Washington Heights. The restaurant is fantastic! The room (twin) small but perfect for our little stay. Included a small fridge which was appreciated. Rooms have an industrial vibe which was cool. Being a good bit away from the tourist traps was actually something we came to really appreciate. Staff were lovely. All in all very chill vibe. Great value for money in my eyes. I’ll be back.
