Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of Times Square hotels, and honestly? Most of them feel like tourist traps with beds. But the Ameritania actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. Walking up to the entrance on 54th Street, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the chaos of Broadway but tucked just far enough away that you’re not dealing with Elmo and the Naked Cowboy under your window at 2 AM.

The lobby hits you with this sort of retro-cool vibe – I mean, it’s not trying too hard to be hip, but there’s definitely some mid-century modern thing happening that works. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the 1 train, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point vaguely toward “the subway” like most places – he told me exactly which exit to use at the 50th Street station and mentioned that the downtown platform gets crazy crowded around 8 AM (he wasn’t kidding). The rooms are… well, they’re New York hotel rooms, so don’t expect a palace, but they’re thoughtfully designed. Everything actually works, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how many places mess this up. The AC was quiet enough that I could sleep with it running, and the blackout curtains are legit – crucial when you’re trying to recover from a late night in the Theater District.

Here’s what really sold me on this place though: the location is just smart. Yeah, you’re in the thick of things, but you’re on the restaurant side of the action rather than the pure tourist circus. There’s a decent bodega right around the corner on 8th Avenue, and you can actually walk to some legitimate New York spots without fighting through crowds of people taking selfies. I grabbed breakfast at Joe Allen (which locals know is where theater people actually eat) and it was maybe a three-minute walk. The hotel bar downstairs is nothing fancy, but it’s the kind of place where you can decompress after a day of sightseeing without paying $18 for a cocktail. I ended up chatting with a couple of off-duty Broadway musicians there one night – that’s the kind of authentic New York moment you don’t get at the big chain places in the heart of Times Square. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. It’s got that sweet spot of being accessible to all the stuff you came to see while still feeling like you’re staying somewhere with a bit of personality rather than just a bed factory for tourists.

  Great location, just a stones throw up from Times Square. Right round the corner from angelos pizza which is a fantastic place to eat. Very close to the subway which is in my opinion, an absolute necessity. And overall, great place to stay, lovely room, the comfiest bed EVER, and the most lovely staff (especially the doormen)

  Location was perfect. The staff were very nice. I messaged hotel to say I’d be arriving after check in due to my flight time. And they kept my room for me.
  Also I slept on an airbed on the floor, and I came back after the first night to bedsheets for my little airbed which was very kind.
