Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott New York Midtown Manhattan/Penn Station Overview
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels in Manhattan, and this Fairfield Inn honestly surprised me. Yeah, it’s on West 33rd Street right in the thick of things – literally a block from Penn Station – but somehow they’ve managed to keep it feeling less chaotic than you’d expect. I mean, you’re still in Hell’s Kitchen, so there’s energy everywhere, but the hotel itself has this surprisingly calm lobby that actually makes you want to linger for a minute before heading out.
The location is pretty brilliant if you think about it. Sure, Penn Station sounds intimidating, but it’s actually perfect – you can literally walk there in two minutes when you’re hauling luggage, and you’re right between the Theater District and Chelsea. I walked to Madison Square Garden in about three minutes (caught a Rangers game), and honestly, getting to Times Square is easier from here than from some of the hotels that are technically closer. Plus, you’re on the edge of Hell’s Kitchen, which means real restaurants instead of just tourist traps. There’s this little Colombian place called Pippali right around the corner that locals actually go to – found it by accident and ended up eating there twice.
What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole “busy Manhattan hotel” thing. Check-in was smooth even though I showed up during what seemed like rush hour, and the staff actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give decent recommendations. The rooms are clean and modern – nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are well-designed. I’ll be honest, it’s not the quietest place in the world (you’re literally in Midtown), but the windows do a decent job of cutting down street noise, and the AC unit isn’t one of those ancient rattling things you get in older buildings. The Wi-Fi actually works, which shouldn’t be noteworthy but somehow still is in New York hotels. One thing that caught me off guard – and I mean this in a good way – was how the whole place just feels well-maintained. You know how some chain hotels feel tired? This one doesn’t. Even the hallways smell fresh instead of like old carpet and industrial cleaner.

Great location, just 3 min. walk from Penn Station. The size of the room is bigger vs. most hotels in NYC/Manhattan. The staff was super friendly and helpful during our stay. Breakfast was included, probably more average but there is for sure something you can find like a coffee and a little sweet.
