Archer Hotel New York Overview
So I’ve stayed at the Archer on 38th Street a handful of times now, and honestly? It’s become my go-to whenever I need to be in Midtown but don’t want to deal with the tourist circus that is Times Square proper. The building itself is this gorgeous brick number that actually feels like it belongs in New York — none of that generic glass box stuff you see everywhere now.
What really gets me about this place is how they nailed the whole “Manhattan hotel” thing without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a shoebox. I mean, the rooms aren’t huge by any stretch, but they’re cleverly designed with these rich leather headboards and warm wood touches that make the space feel intentional rather than cramped. The windows are surprisingly good at keeping out the street noise too, which is saying something since you’re literally in the heart of everything. You know what I really appreciate? The lighting — they actually thought about it. There are enough outlets and the bedside setup doesn’t require you to choose between charging your phone and having a decent reading light.
The location is where this place really shines though. You’re a quick walk to Bryant Park (honestly one of the best spots in the city), Penn Station is right there if you need to catch a train, and you can hit up the Garment District or Herald Square without breaking a sweat. But here’s the thing locals know — you’re also close enough to duck into some of the better Korean spots on 32nd Street when you get tired of typical hotel restaurant fare. The front desk staff seems to get this too; they’re not just pointing everyone toward the same three tourist traps. I had one guy tell me about this little wine bar tucked away on 37th that I never would have found otherwise.
The lobby has this cozy, almost residential feel with dark wood and vintage-style furnishings — sort of like what a really well-designed apartment building might have if someone actually cared about the common spaces. Check-in is usually pretty smooth, though I’ve noticed it can get a bit backed up during fashion week when the Garment District gets crazy busy. The rooftop situation is solid too, especially if you time it right during sunset. Nothing too fancy, but you get decent views and it’s not overrun with bridge-and-tunnel crowds like some of the flashier spots.
Look, it’s not perfect — the elevators can be slow during peak times, and if you’re on a lower floor facing the street, you’ll hear some city sounds no matter what. But for a 4-star place in this part of town, with ratings consistently in the high 8s, the Archer delivers on being authentically New York without the pretension. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax after a day of meetings or sightseeing, and you’re not paying for a bunch of amenities you’ll never use. If you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere that gets the city rather than just existing in it, this is a solid choice.

There are 3 things that made this hotel an excellent choice:
1. The location – you can walk to all the famous midtown attractions and subway the rest from nearby Bryant Park
2. The room size – bigger than usual NY standards with a walk in bathroom
3. The roof top bar with a fantastic view of the Empire State Building – really cool
