Carnegie Hotel Overview

You know what struck me first about the Carnegie Hotel? It’s tucked right into that sweet spot on West 56th where you’re literally steps from Central Park but somehow it doesn’t feel like you’re drowning in the usual Midtown chaos. I mean, you’re still in the thick of it – Carnegie Hall is practically next door (hence the name, obviously) – but there’s something about this particular block that feels more… manageable, I guess.

The building itself has this classic New York vibe without trying too hard. It’s not one of those places that hits you over the head with marble and gold everywhere, but it’s definitely got character. The lobby’s actually pretty cozy – I remember thinking it felt more like a really nice apartment building than a typical hotel. Check-in was smooth, honestly faster than I expected for a place that clearly gets its share of tourists and business travelers. The staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood too, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about good coffee nearby, the guy at the front desk pointed me toward this little spot on 57th that I never would’ve found otherwise.

Here’s the thing about the location – and this is something you only really appreciate after staying there – you can walk to basically everything. Times Square if you must (though honestly, why would you), but more importantly you’re right there for Lincoln Center, and the subway situation is actually decent. The N, Q, R, W trains are all close by, plus you’ve got the F if you need it. I stayed there during a particularly brutal February and even then, getting around was pretty painless. The rooms are solid – not huge, because this is Manhattan and you’re paying for location, but thoughtfully laid out. Mine faced the street and yes, there’s some noise, but it’s that low-level city hum that somehow becomes white noise after the first night. The bed was actually comfortable, which I don’t say lightly after years of hotel sleeping disasters.

What really won me over was the little details. The elevators are quick – sounds silly, but when you’re rushing to get somewhere in New York, it matters. There’s decent water pressure in the showers. The WiFi actually works. These aren’t glamorous things, but they’re the stuff that makes or breaks a stay when you’re dealing with back-to-back meetings or trying to decompress after walking fifteen miles around the city. I also noticed they keep the common areas clean without that overpowering cleaning product smell that some places have.

Look, this isn’t the fanciest hotel in New York, and it’s not trying to be. But if you want a place that feels like it belongs in the neighborhood rather than just dropped there for tourists, the Carnegie really delivers. The 8.7 rating makes sense – it’s the kind of place that does the fundamentals really well without any major surprises, good or bad. Plus, and this might sound weird, but I actually slept well there, which in a city that never sleeps is honestly worth its weight in gold.

Location is perfect. just near the subway. straight to JFK! I don't know who are the people that complain about the breakfast, its not common to have any breakfast at all. And yes you don't have eggs and bacon, but you have: yogurts, some bread for choice, oatmeals, cereals, some fruits, 3-4 kinds of juices, some jam and honey, toaster, 5-8 coffee option from coffee machine include hot chocolat. As well you can drink coffee ALL DAY the machine is completely free!! as well you can fill water when you want totally free. I liked the stuff. we had great talks and the were very helpful. The room is nice, not small as in Paris. Very clean room. room was cleaned every day. I really enjoyed the place.

Terrific location. The Carnegie is a small hotel and it feels like it — not part of a giant chain. Room was very comfortable, generously sized for NYC, perfectly clean. Outstanding staff: friendly, knowledgeable, easy to work with. WiFi excellent, room quiet — what's not to like? The LEDs that sparkle on room electronics were at eye level, so that I could cover them up for a darkened room and a good sleep. All of the policies feel generous, not scrimpy.

Room was small but clean and comfortable. Location was great. The wine and cheese hour in the afternoon was fun. The staff was great!

  • Berkay from Netherlands (9/10)

Excellent location. Very close to Central Park and Times Square and yet it is far enough that you dont feel the crowd and chaos of tourists 🙂

  • Wilson from Brazil (8/10)

The staff were very helpful and friendly.
The breakfast made available was a big bonus and much appreciated.
The happy hour with wines and cheese/nuts was also a very positive point and enjoyed by all.
We had no need of coffee/tea maker in the room as there were hot and cold beverages available all day and night down at the canteen area.
The location beside the Carnegie Hall and near to Central Park is another positive point.

Services are great! The hotel is clean, fresh, warm, recently renovated. We were allowed to do late check out and have our bags stored with conceiergefor free for the rest of the day. The wine and cheese night is fun! They served a lot of beverages. Breakfast is sufficient too. Staff are the best part.
