DoubleTree by Hilton New York Times Square South Overview
Honestly, when I first walked into the DoubleTree on 8th Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s smack in the middle of tourist chaos, right? But you know what surprised me? The lobby actually feels like a proper retreat from all that Times Square madness happening just a few blocks north. The whole place has this warm, almost residential vibe that’s pretty rare for Midtown hotels, and yes, they still do that chocolate chip cookie thing at check-in (which never gets old, if we’re being honest).
The location is actually brilliant once you figure out the neighborhood flow. You’re technically in Hell’s Kitchen, which sounds intimidating but is really just where all the good restaurants are hiding – I’m talking about spots the Broadway crowd hits up before shows, not the overpriced tourist traps. Walking to actual Times Square takes maybe eight minutes, but here’s the thing: you can also easily duck into Port Authority or catch the subway without fighting through the Elmo costume crowd. The streets around here get pretty lively at night, but it’s more of a city hum than actual noise problems once you’re inside your room. Parking is… well, it’s Midtown, so forget about street parking, but there are garages nearby if you’re driving in (though honestly, why would you?).
What really won me over was how the staff actually seems to know what they’re doing – check-in was smooth even during what looked like a busy conference week, and the front desk folks gave me restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist spots. The rooms themselves are solid DoubleTree standard, nothing fancy but everything works properly, and the beds are legitimately comfortable (I’m picky about this). The fitness center is small but functional, and there’s a business center that’s actually useful if you need to print boarding passes or whatever. One small thing that matters: the elevators are reasonably fast, which you don’t always get in these older Midtown buildings. The whole place just feels well-maintained in a way that makes you think they’re actually paying attention to details rather than just coasting on the Hilton name. If you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring the city anyway – which you should – this gives you a comfortable home base that won’t eat your entire travel budget, and you’ll sleep well enough to actually enjoy those long New York walking days.

Perfect location – Macy's, Times Square, Empire State Building etc. all within a 10-15 minute walk. The subway (Penn Station) is less than 2 mins walk away which was really convenient for us to travel downtown or uptown to Central Park. I thought the bed and pillows were the comfiest i've had at a hotel and the mini-fridge was really useful for somewhere to put our drinks.
Local breakfast places within 5-7 mins walk:
– Liberty Bagels (delicious)
– Best Bagel & Coffee (delicious)
– The Bread Factory (great bagels, great service, wide selection of snacks and drinks)
– Andrew's NYC Diner (delicious french toast/omlettes/pancakes, go before 08:00 – 09:30 to beat the queues)
My top tip – wake up early to walk across Brooklyn Bridge for sunrise (get a bagel from Liberty Bagels round the corner before it gets busy, jump on the A / C line (middle platform) downtown to High St. Brooklyn and walk back towards Manhattan). You'll be downtown and can choose to explore Chinatown / Wall Street etc. The location of this hotel makes this really convenient.
Other local places:
– 7/11 (2 mins walk away, really convenient for us to stock up on snacks & drinks)
– Steak Frites Bistro (delicious dinner, 5 mins walk)
– 2 Bros Pizza (great for a lunch / quick late dinner)
– Jollibee (delicious for lunch)
– Madison Square Garden (basketball was fun and the quickest you'll be home from a sporting event)
– Macy's (go to some shopping! 5 mins walk)Chastidy from United States (9/10)
Very clean and very good location. Walking distance from many attractions.
